I was reading through millions of reviews and just can't decide whiche of these two to choose.

Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L USM

OR

Canon EF 75-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM

I think it would be cool to be able to take some shots without a tripod. But it says that the image quality of the Canon EF 75-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM is really crappy wide open...so...don't you just loose the advantage of the IS like that???

When it comes to sharpness. Are the results really like day and night which some post-processing in photoshop couldn't fix?

I would be really happy if you could give me some adivse here.

I think that you are asking about the worst reviewed lens that I can think of (75-300) and a lens that is considered the best value in glass available today. If you bought the 75-300 I think that you might end up painting it white just to make yourself feel better.

DEFINATELY Go for the 70-200mm f/4L

It is indeed the best deal in a telephoto zoom Canon makes!

Grab it and you will be amazed!

I recently purchased the 70-200 f/4 after reading dozens of posts on this forum & messaging with a few individuals. This lens is capable producing stunning results.

I could not be more pleased with the lens, and feel truly fortunate to have found this forum.... before I invested a ton of cash on glass.

Thanks to all who contribute!!!

We have the 28-135IS and the 75-300IS both, and they work for us real well. We don't have the 70-200/4 so we can't compare with that. We do have the 70-200 2.8IS and DO enjoy it.

We haven't decided yet on which lens to buy for Ani to use instead of the 75-300 because it is doing such a good job for her. She takes excellent pictures with it... we will just have to wait and see. I do know it is not worth while for us to purchase the 70-200/4. We may buy the 70-200 DO/IS for her.

Go rent both of them for a weekend and take some shots and you decide which one will work for YOU.
