Do you have one, if so, do you like it?

I have an awesome one from GPS, but it is khaki and too big..I lost a ton of weight a few years ago, and another costs 75.00, I saw the black ones on POTN...

So? How many of you use them?

I would never wear a photographer's vest, let alone at a wedding.

That's just me, though. :)

I use one occasionally, only when I don't have an assistant, I really like mine, but its black so hopefully it doesn't stand out too much. I think it looks fine with what I wear, and it carries everything I need (including lenses)

nah, don't like it. I might use one if I were shooting motorsports, nature or anything like that but it just looks kinda... well... weird at a wedding. Just an opinion.

but I don't even own one...

I think it would be alot easier then toting around a bag, backpack or whatever for the after shots? and black would work with anything...

hmmm...unless they look way more relaxed then the vest I have...i use it at sporting events...

well..just curious...

Just wondering? What do you want to keep on you at all times? I have my camera on me, extra batteries and cf cards in my pocket.. my bag is normally really handy- typically by the DJ, and I am within moments of another lens if I need it... :) I would think I would just get hotter in the vest- but ofcourse most of you aren't in the sweltering heat and humidity of sweet ol East Texas!

Camera, lens cap, cell phone, card, battery, flash, diffuser, fong thing...

I can't stand to have things in my pants pockets...really drives me, but that is normally too...

the boda bag looks nice and waiting on that simpson bag? I think that was her name, but still nothing...sooo...I was looking for an alternative to the bag I carry..

The vest have net so they don't get you real hot..the one i have and use for sporting events is very lightweight...I actually like to wear it.

I wear a classy style 'cargo' pant. Nice and dressy looking, but with just enough pockets to hold CF cards, CP filters, batteries and chapstick. :D
It's an alternative to the vest.

Now that is interesting....is it bulky at all?

Hey Jamie,

Little bit - but I only need a bag to schlep my stuff to and from the wedding. Once I'm there I can carry everything I need for the entire day in the chestvest. Those middle pockets are big enough for a 70-200.

For example, I'm at the front of the church and I see a great opportunity for a fisheye shot. Before the chestvest that meant a trip to my bag in the back of the church. Now I just reach into one of the pouches...

Does get a bit heavy by the end of the night though...

I just keep my bags nearby w/my cell phone and batteries inside, and put my memory cards in a memory card case (holds 6), and stick in in between my stomach and my pants on my left side, and I put my lens cap(s) on the other side. ;) My button down shirt covers 'em...No pockets in the pants I wear to weddings. I leave my flash on my camera, too.

I just keep the bag at the back of the church or near the DJ at the reception. 30D with 17-55 and 580EX and the 20D with the 70-200 and 580EX.... Really really don't need anything else 98% of the time...and pocket rocket with my CF cards and I'm good to go.
You wouldn't catch me wearing a vest or anything similar at a wedding. I have to look cool you know... lol... seriously just kidding with that last statement.

Now the problem with that gear is that when I throw myself flat on the ground for the perfect shot, all those cases will either be squashed or I'll damage every internal organ I have!

Because I carry both cameras on me, I have to use a waistpack, so the Shootsac from Jessica Claire is out. My current one is from Lowepro and I can switch it quickly to my back. I'm working on creating a "lenses only" bag out of a former purse, it may get its first tryout at this weekend's wedding.

I'm in a lengthy seminar next month with the Boda creator, Jim Garner, so I'm hoping to get a closer look--had a fast peek at the Bambi Cantrell seminar I was in with him last month, but just didn't have enough time to get a good feel for it. I'll post my findings when I get a chance.

Nope. Can't say I've worn a vest, ever. But I can see how useful it would have been in the mountains last summer. Weddings are formal events mostly, and photographers are supposed to be stealthy (IMO). A vest screams of "I'm the Pro here, move over" or "I'm the Pro here, see how dorky I am?" :)

Hmm...good point. Mines a nice camo colour so it wouldn't get confused with jamie's although I'm sure there's times when you Pro's would prefer mine to deal with a MOTB?

I think they look like a fly fisherman's outfit. I would NEVER wear a photographers vest, but I am planning to buy one of those big belts that you can attach different sized bags to. I am going to get one to hold a lens and one little bag for memory cards diffusers and such.

Jamie,
What would you do if you needed to lay down to get a good shot? Does it come off really easily?

jamiewexler
17th of May 2007 (Thu), 10:47
Alicia, I can't think of a time when I have ever laid on my belly for a shot. I sit down a lot, and lean way down so that my camera is touching the ground, lay on my back, lay on my side, but never on my stomach. To get out of it, you just unbuckle the back and slip it over your head like a tshirt...

motogeno

I think the only thing that I am less likely to do besides wearing a vest at a wedding is to lay on my belly in the middle of it!

Jamie, if you weren't such a fantastic photographer, I'd have to make fun of you.

Ok, I can't help it... even though you're a fantastic photographer... first thing that came to mind was that this looks like an oversized Bat utility belt. Hey, you should get a GOBO for your lights in the shape of the Bat signal. hahaha. I'm just kidding with you... At the last wedding I did, my assistant bailed on me and I was flying solo. I REALLY could have used something like that.

I am designing a formal looking shoulder bag. It is similar in style to a messenger bag but will be made of rich fabric, will be smaller and organized for photography equip. It will only be big enough to keep the essentials on me (cards, batteries, a lens or two, etc...). I guess I am too picky but I just can't find one that suits me online. The vest just seems so national geographic...

I'd go with less of a vest, and more with a utility belt =P

jkloef

Yes of course there are! lol (open mouth insert lens) I didn't mean it as a slam on NG I'm sure the vest is awesome, I just am looking for something more "formal". Come on ya gotta give me that...the vest IS more utilitarian than say a silk bag! ;)

I know, I know - and I look so hawt () in my black suit and sunglasses... then I have to put on a unibomber vest and ruin it. People snicker behind my back. Children run in fear. Bridesmaids don't stare at my butt anymore.

But when both my flashes die (like happened at a wedding a couple of weeks ago) and my bag is across the room, it sure is handy to have a BU flash on my person!

If I shot with an assistant, I would make him/her wear the vest...but since I shoot alone, it is my sad fate ;).

I am doing a wedding this weekend with something new... a Pelican case on wheels. Since I have 3 camera bodies, 5 lenses, 2 flashes and an assistant working with me, I thought it would be a lot easier to roll my equipment behind me and have it all in spot. We'll see how it works out.

Jamie,

I don't think I have ever laid on my belly to take a shot either, come to think of it.. well not except for flowers. I have laid on my belly to shoot up at short flowers because laying on my back and looking upside down to do it just would drive me nuts. :-)
