How does EE commerce work???

If I set up EE commerce to "Mail Author", will people who visit my site be able to view the normal size image of my pictures and click a link on that page which will then allow them to fill out a form which collects the order info? I tried to set up this, but didn't have much success... Anyone know how this works and the procedure to set it up???
