Does the Rebel XT take advantage of the speed of an extreme III card? Would I be wasting money?

I have no idea if it makes any difference when taking pictures but when I used to put my old memory card in the red light on the camera would blink on and off for about a second but with my new Extreme 3 card it just lights up once and then goes off so it must be doing something faster. Sorry if this doesnt really help but it was the first thing I noticed that had made a difference when I got it, recovery software that you get with the Extreme 3's make it worthwhile though.

I can't speak for the 4Gb card, but the two 2Gb Ultra III's I got a week or two ago came with the pouch and recovery software (all inside the SanDisk plastic package).
Cheers,

Based on Robs tests and prices from Warehouse express:

You now need to make your own judgement based on what your priority is, value or out right speed.

I must say that I'd recommend the LedShoppe CF reader. Handy size (same as a largeish USB memory key), unbeatable price ($5 including shipping), and it does ~12 megabytes/sec on my Extreme III 2GB.
Apologies in advance for the ocular trauma: http://ledshoppe.com/Product/com/CA2006.htm

I want , need one for firewire .
I just printed 2 each of 14 photo's [ friend going back to Mexico .]
Anyway I put 14 on a cheap 1 gig card -$ 10 from micro center ] and the same 14 on my new sandisk III - 4 gig card , they printed about the same - a little over 14 minutes on each card .

well you are not being limited by the card but more by your reader.
USB 1.1 is very slow by todays standards. Were the files RAW? did you print directly from the printer? what model?

Printed direct from printer - put card in printer slot .
This was 14 prints on the HP 100 .
I did do 6 on HP 7350 - 8X10'' 3 from each card - about 4 minutes for 3 prints on each . I know the 7350 is USB 2.0 , don't know about the 100 .
Yes they were all RAW . When Transferred to computer they ended up a little over 4 meg each . see upper right hand corner of attachment .
I always date my camera 2 days ahead . Personal ID thing .

I recently purchased Sandisk Extreme III 8GB CF and used it with my Canon 300D. I am disappointed with this card as my camera take close to a minute to save burst of 4 photos. With my standard 2GB the 4 burst photos will be saved within 20 secs.
Furthermore, the first time I used it (after formating in camera) out 27 photos 6 were corrupt.
I am not sure whether I have a faulty card or my camera is not capable of handling fast/large cards.
PS: that recovery software takes forever (over 4 hours) to go through the card and find lost files.

I can't remember for sure, but I've got a feeling that the Digital Rebel doesn't have FAT 32 support, which means it shouldn't be used with partitions larger than 2GB. Some early 4GB cards had a switch which meant you could use them as a 4GB card or two 2GB cards (there were three positions on the switch), but these cards have long since disappeared.
If that's the problem, the only way around it is to stick to cards of 2GB and smaller.

well dont because if you actually look into it the 350D does support FAT32 and works perfectly well with cards over 2 gigs :D

CF cards and Microdrives (type I and Type II) can be used. It appears that cards over 2GB will automatically be formatted using FAT32 in the camera to access their full capacity (FAT16 only supports up to 2GB).http://www.bobatkins.com/photography/digital/eos_digital_rebel_xt.html

The Digital Rebel is the 300D - and I'm pretty sure there's no FAT32 support. The 350D is the Digital Rebel XT - which does support FAT32.
I stand by my original answer.

http://www.lexar.com/support/fat32.html
At this time the 4 GB card can be used with the following cameras that support FAT32 and have a CF Type II slot.
Cameras that accept CompactFlash Type II that are also FAT32-compatible:
Canon Powershot G3
Canon Powershot G5
Canon Powershot S45
Canon Powershot S50
Canon EOS 300D
Canon EOS 10D
Canon EOS-1Ds
Canon EOS-1D Mark II
Canon EOS Rebel/300D
http://www.dpreview.com/news/0308/03082005canoneos300d.asp
Other features • Orientation sensor
• Automatically writes FAT16/FAT32 depending on capacity
• LCD panel illumination
i stand corrected on the digital rebel being the 300D. I did know that. i forgot the OP posted 300D and not 350D. Please forgive me.

So, now I am confused. Earlier it was stated that Digital Rebel (300D) does not support FAT-32. As per the Lexar link about it states that Digital Rebel (300D) does support FAT-32.
Is it that Digital Rebel (300D) supports FAT-32 for cards upto 4GB only?

There is a very good chance that you card is a fake if it is that slow. I got done with a fake 2GB Extreme III card.
So now I stick to Ultra II 1 & 2 GB and they work very well in the 350D/XT

Sort out time.
I was right that the Digital Rebel is the 300D.
I was wrong that the Digital Rebel doesn't support FAT32. I'd misremembered the exact point along the timeline that Canon introduced FAT32 support. My sincere apologies for the incorrect information.
I'd check the camera's firmware version, and update it to the latest before going any further - do this from a known good CompactFlash card, otherwise you might 'brick' the camera.
As has been said, chances are that this 8GB card is fake or faulty - I'd bet on fake. What happens if you try to 'punish' it with a card reader - copy on a bunch of files, delete some, copy on some more, and, if you have a suitable software tool, compare those files against the originals? That has been enough to get faulty cards to break in my experience, though it's not proof.

If you're using a PCMCIA reader, all transfers are going to be incredibly slow. You'd be far better changing that reader for a Cardbus one - where the speeds will be comparable to a USB 2.0 reader. Delkin and Lexar make Cardbus readers - but be aware that these devices need drivers, so check that your chosen operating system is supported.
With a Cardbus reader, Extreme III may be a bit faster - but it may well not be dramatically faster.

Just a word , the instructions say to format the card in camera . It formats for fat 32 AND a camera that uses 16 can't read it without reformating to 16 .

Interesting. I bought my card from CostCo.com (online). I would not have thought for a moment that Costco would sell fake cards.
I will try to 'punish' the card later next week (moving houses!).
I use Dell Ultrasharp Monitor's inbuilt card reader, which has performed well with Ultra cards.
