View Full Version : Canon or Sigma? Below the 50mm Range - HELP

Hey All,

Feeling a little stretched these days trying to decide on my next lens. Currently I am working with the 50mm and 85mm. In the studio I'm finding my 50mm is too long for glamour/creative photography.

Trying to decide on whether to get:

- Canon 35mm f/1.4L
- Canon 17-40 f/4L
- Sigma 17-70

Arghhhhhhhhhh. The caveat is that I want to buy a lens that I can bring with me when I go FF.

Thanks in advance.

how about the canon 24-70L or its cheaper sigma counterpart, the sigma 24-70EX , or even the tamron 28-75. i know they aren't superwide, but i believe all 3 are fullframe lenses.

sigma 17-70 isnt...

Easy pick for me, 35L.

If you can afford the prime and want a prime then get it. One of my very favourite lenses. I've had the other two and the L is a bit short on a crop but a great super-wide on a FF. The 17-70mm is very practical day to day and has decent build and IQ with no real downers. Thing is, you can always sell if you go FF and not loose much if you shop around when buying. I might go for the L tho' given you have 50mm and 85mm covered. You will just swapping when you need more range that's all. I prefer not to. You will need decent light with both zooms indoors if you want them for glam. 24-70mm might be better as 2.8, which ever brand you go for.

I agree.

I'm not sure about the Sigma, but it gets good reports. The Canon 17-40 is a pretty good lens but f4 of course, so I'd say the best bet is the Canon 35mm f/4 L.

From what I've seen, the Sigma 30 f/1.4 EX is very usable on a FF camera, it just has dark corners (which can be cropped out easily with 12MP :) ) ...just a thought.

I'm thinking I'll bite on the 35L. Will look at picking it up next month. 17-40 I don't think will really do the trick.

That would not be acceptable to me.

I agree. I don't want to crop all my images just because I cheaped out on a lens. I would save over $700 in man-hours just by buying a lens that works in the first place.

35L hands-down. I've looked thru hundreds of reviews and MTF charts on all primes of all brands less than or equal to 50mm. Sorry folks, I only found two worthy of my money:

Canon 35mm f/1.4L = saving up for this baby
Sigma 50mm f/2.8 Macro EX DG = sharp sharp sharp and cheap cheap cheap

I really wished Canon would update the 35mm f/2.

And the 20mm f/2.8.
