Just being out and taken my first pictures with my A80, having reviewed them the ones with sky look like the two top corners are darker than the rest of the photo, what would cause this?

Example image here, taking a closer look it would appear to be in the bottom corners too.

It's a natural occurance with photography and it's called light fall off, or for more extreme cases vignetting. It is more noticable on uniform scenes like sky or grass.

All lenses will natually produce a round image. The sensor format is rectangular. For some reason, the sensor got less light in the corners than it did elsewhere. The more expensive the lens the less likely for this to occur.

Had you used an add on lens adapter to take this photo? Perhaps the zoom setting was not correct for the adapter used.

Did you use filters? Don't stack so many...

No filters, no lenses.

The fact that you're asking suggests that you may think that there is more fall off here then would be normal?

As I say it was late-ish evening, would the low light be a factor?

I ask about stacking filters and add on lenses as these will induce light fall off very easily, and can ab easily corrected (by not stacking so many filters or by using the add on lens correctly.)

Since you didn't, then the camera itself is producing this.

Since this picture was wide angle and full open (fstop) do some quick testing: Take shot of a blank wall (easy to see the fall off) then again zoomed in, then again zoomed out but minimum aperture.
You will likely find the problem goes away when you zoom in...

Brighter lighting may well make it less noticable, but I'm not sure...

Now, is it defective? Not likely, but it may be. Check with Canon on the specs for light fall off, and send them a link to the photo (email). If they say it's not normal, then send it in.

Your camera is not defective. The problem you have is called "Vignetting". Lots of cheaper camera's have it, but also the Canon Pro 1 suffers from this.

If you want to read more about it, go to this page:

Thanks for the replies, had a further play with my camera over the weekend and there were no obvious signs of vignetting in better lighting conditions...

Hi I have a question about the A80 and think I should keep all A80 questions in this thread.

Anyways I just bought one and on trying to organize software for download to pc I realized that the A80 is not compatible with windows server 2003. Is there anyway I can make it compatible?

thanks

ama

Hi Giant,

Thanks for the reply and information.
Well I guess the only thing we can do is to switch OS.
For now Im downloading on my husband's pc which has XP and tranferring pics to my PC using a flash drive.

How are you coping?

Ama

All I do is use a USB card reader. I take out the card and download my pictures that way. Works fine with the Zoombrowser software as well.

I also just use my wifes networked PC (She uses XP) to download with the cable when she uses it.

:D
