The title really says everything. I saw this unit sitting on a siding next to the freeway in Thousand Palms. I got off at the next exit, grabbed my camera, and had my wife drive back the other way. These are not great shots, but are good enough under the circumstances.

Brakes and batteries....the numbers on this beast are impressive. And look...you got to shoot something other than UP pink for a change! Congrats on a great find.

Wow! I occasionally see components of locomotives on EB I-94 is SW Michigan, which is about as close as I can get as I haven't seen much in new power around here. Cool to see one assembled. It wouldn't have come from Ontario, would it?
I'm not into diesels much past February 1968 when my beloved PRR wheezed it's last. Maybe I should re-evaluate?

KevinIt was heading towards Ontario, California (west). I've never seen one of these before, and apparently, this is the only one with this paint scheme.
I'd love to see the electronics in the Test Car that's behind the engine in question. I'm sure they can monitor everything from there including the engineer's cholesterol.

I had a link to the GE site...they have a bit of info on it...gives some of the specs and performance characteristics. I'll see if I can find it again. Some info here....http://ge.ecomagination.com/site/index.html#hybr

Interesting link. A lot of those 'photos' appar to be artist's renderings. That's interesting that they can increase the starting power by 2,000 HP by adding the batteries.
Pretty impressive technology...

Like you said...it would be interesting to see what is cooking in the test car! I did find one other shot of it...on one of the rail sites...taken in April in Erie, PA.
Just read a news note that it was in Clinton, Iowa on the 13th...so they are slowly wandering west...guess they probably did some testing in the mountains.

Wow, $10 says that thing glows in the dark...
Cool photos. Hopefully it'll make a trip over Tehachapi next weekend.

All GE locomotives are built in Erie PA while the parts that take I-94 are EMD and go between the La Grange IL plant and the one in London Ontario for final assembly.

So that's the new workhorse locomotive of the future? Nice shots Belmondo...
I might have been able to see one of these when I lived in Reno/Sparks, NV or the Buffalo, NY area... Nearest place for trains around here is Scranton, PA...
You guys seem to be into this Iron Horse thing... I would certainly rather travel cross country by train rather than drive anymore...

Doh! Just goes to show my ignorance in modern locomotives. The large radiators all look alike to me.
Thanks for the correction,

I know this is an old post but I just came across it and had to reply. I work in Erie PA but live in a small town outside the city. I actually drive by the plant every day. The amount of land they have for the plant itself always amazes me. You really can't see too much of it though just driving by because of all the trees. What does really interest me though is their test track. The road I take home actually runs paralelle to the test track. Funny how its one of those things I take for granted. I've never actually stopped to watch one of the locomotives go by. there is actually a spot on the other side of the test track accessible from another road that has picnic tables and benches set up because it is a very popular place to watch the trains. The end of the test track can be seen right from the road so very often you will see them stopped there or even going very slow as they are stopping or starting back up to head back to the plant.
