I'd been hearing these guys all morning the other day at Huntley Meadows Park, near Alexandria, VA. However, even a good bit of "pishing" was not getting them up out of the brush until this little fellow decided to give an almost-perfect pose atop a cattail.

I'd like for him to have been singing, but otherwise, I don't think I could have asked more of this little guy.

That's a keeper. :)

How big is this guy? He looks very tiny.

As far as warblers go, I think he's on the smallish end; certainly no butterbum (Yellow-rumped) or Yellow-breasted Chat.

As pictured, the photo has not been cropped much at all, so I was pretty close to him (maybe 6 feet away; this was with the 300 f4L + 1.4x TC on my 30D).

They're often amongst the more inquisitive warblers and will pop right up next to you for a look, so it's not as hard to get a closeup of one of them as, say, with a Redstart or any of the other tree-dwelling warblers. IME, only the Palm Warbler and Pine Warbler are "friendlier," and these guys certainly beat them in terms of song.

Thanks!

I got a similar shot last spring (even down to the bird being the same variety of yellowthroat, with the yellow only on his breast and not his entire undersides), in nearly the exact same spot and on the same perch... but from twice as far away. I love that this one requires next to no cropping at all. :D

Fantastic shot. I really like everything about this one. The bird, the perch, BG, all works.
