17-55mm 2.8 IS and my 70-200mm 2.8 IS? One? Other? Neither?

I bought the 70-200 a month or so ago, and haven't even taken 10 pics with it yet...this will be a beach wedding...(not sure if it's indoors or out)

Thoughts? (I know enough to stay away from the pro)

Since you are a guest I would just stick to the 17-55, it gives you a nice range and with the 70-200 you might make the pro unhappy :)

If it's a beach wedding im guessing its outdoors (ha). If I were you, as a guest, I'd take the 17-55. I think it would look kinds silly to see a guest lugging around a 70-200, but that's just me.

ha! that's sounds a better idea. :) seriously, if i have a 17 - 55 that's what i should be bringin too. after a few hours with your 70 - 200 it's gonna ba heavy and you might not enjoy the party anymore. i tried it with my 20d + 24 - 70, after carrying it for a few hours it got heavy. plus like the others say you might make the pro unhappy coz you have a better lens than him lol :)

Well, I brought the 17-55 ... the pro had a 2 5D's, but he only had the 70-200mm NON IS 2.8 :)

Along with the 24-70...

sounds like a very good combo of lenses, I like it so much I just happen to own the same. Nothing wrong with not having IS, people managed to get good photos for a very long time without it.

Unless you've been specifically asked to take pictures, leave the camera at home and enjoy the party.

No reason why you can't take the camera and enjoy the party too!

I understand for those who are pro wedding photogs, a day off is nice - but for those of us who enjoy photography but don't make a living from it, a wedding is an excuse to break out the gear and have fun.

I take my camera everywhere I go. Sometimes it stays in the car, but you never know when your going to want it.

Plus who knows, he might catch the best picture at the party when the pro is somewhere else.

bring both imo, and just have it in a bag. That gives u the option to get drunk, have a wild night, or have the camera + lenses there if u need it. As said, u can always leave them at the car, or go to the car to get your stuff if u're feeling trigger happy =)

Just remember not to get in the way. This makes it difficult if there is someone there trying to get a shot of everything. Most of the time this makes the hired photographer have to work twice as hard trying to make sure that the other shooter isn't in the background. Just a thought.

I'm not suggesting to get in the pro's way. Let the pro do his (her) job, esp. the formals. There's plenty of family/friends to shoot. Bring a longer lens and shoot candids from a distance.

Jim,
I wasn't saying that "you" would get in the way. I have just been to too many weddings where people bring their full gear to take some shots tend to be in the way more times than not. I know they are not meaning to do this, but it happens. I wasn't trying to pin this on you. Best wishes, Mike

No offense taken.

I know the wedding's over and all, but I'd leave both the 17-55 and the 70-200 at home and rent the 85L. Arriving as a guest, you can get great practice shots in and experiment with ideas you're not quite ready to spring on the world; when it comes time to party at the reception, hide the equipment in your car and head back in for fun. Should a "party moment" happen, you can get the camera back in without one of those damn-I-wish-I-had-my-camera thoughts poking you in the head...:D

i recently went to a friends wedding and i shots some photos as a guest. and i've used 70-200 IS f2.8 most of the time. i didn't want to get in the pro's way so i used long focal and shot from distance. Yes pro didn't seems to like it but i didn't get in his way at all. with 70-200 you will get total diff. shots. no eye contact but give a nice look of what they were doing from a different view. i say you should take 70-200 and have some fun with it.
