Transfer speed??

The last Belkin device I used to transfer my pics to my ipod was soooo SLOW I felt like throwing it out the window............And mind you, they say its "FIREWIRE"!!!

This is a Delkin device. If I can unload a 512MB card in 2 minutes or so, then I'll definitely pick one of these up. Now that the door has been opened with this unique device, you can see all the competitors coming up with better and faster products. But imagine being able to carry 200+ GB of storage with you. You can't beat that.

You're right.........I think Belkin also has a "new" product similar to this one. Again, I am all for it if it can transfer your images using USB 2 technology........I guess we'll have to wait till June :-)

It would be even nicer if the device itself contained a CF card reader, so that you could just plug it in to your external USB 2.0 hard disk and copy the files.

A disadvantage is that it's probably hard to check what's on the hard drive - you can't really check if your photos are copied without errors.

You are right...I guess they can use some type of CRC checking to make sure the files were copied correctly. This is what is used when transferring data over a line and it's a way of ensuring that the data you read is the same data you copied. Give Delkin some time and they'll integrate a small LCD into your bridge and it will show the photos you are copying. There are a lot of possibilities with this one....

That price doesn't include any sort of rechargeable batteries. It appears you'd only be able to transfer files if you had an outlet to plug the USB enclosure into...

Powering a small microprocessor (required for USB-connectivity) inside the Delkin-device is the least to worry about. Where on earth do you find power-outlets to power a 7,200RPM standard IDE-drive out in the field? Last time I checked, theese external harddrive cabinets use external power-supply for the disk inside..

Well.... inverters !!!
you can use those suckers for anything, as long as you have a car battery to hook it up to. Plus you can use them for charging batteries, etc.

Well, according to Delkin, it can (that's what it says in the press release). It only starts shipping in june, so I'm pretty sure no one has tried it yet.

Yeah, and unless you want to walk home again, you better not start hooking computer-gear into your car-battery with the engine turned off. A harddrive now, a 3.4GHz Intel "Extreme-on-the-go(tm)" edition with a 21" CRT tomorrow ;)

No not yet. As for powering it, you can use an inverter as suggested above. If you don't want to go that route, then a smaller laptop 2.5" disk that takes less power could be powered by batteries and would be portable. Since wherever I go, I would have access to a power source or at least a car at the end of a day or two, I figured this would make a good system for me. If you are going on week long hikes in Denali National Park and don't have access to power, then you are SOOL.

It sure seems simpler for me to use my X drive. It works for a long time on a battery charge.
