Great to see more shots from this lens!
More from me:
At 210mm f/5.6

100% crop, no sharpening or pp applied except for default Jpeg conversion from RAW

At 210mm again:

Last one at 210mm

I'm extremely satisfied with the performance of this lens at 210mm. It's not as sharp as the 80-100mm range but it's certainly sharp enough for me.
A last one, taken at 70mm

It was a good run, but today I let this lens go for $200. It served me well and produced some of my best shots. Unfortunately, my recently-acquired 60mm Macro and 18-55mm IS have turned me into a sharpness freak so I figured the 70-200mm f/4L would be worth the investment, mainly for the color/contrast and wide-open performance at the long end where I do most of my shooting. I had one last shoot at Armand Bayou with the 70-210mm today:

DDWD10, didn't you consider keeping it as a back-up for times when you wouldn't want to risk the L?
Good luck with your 70-200 f/4 in any case!

I definitely thought about it, especially when my back-and-forth between the 70-200 4L and 200 2.8L shifted in favor of the latter. I've never as much as nicked my gear (knock on wood) and my funds are stretched pretty tight right now so I figured to just go ahead and sell the 70-210mm and get the L outright.
If anything, the 70-210mm made me fall in love with telephoto photography so it was only a matter of time before I bit the bullet and upgraded to L glass.

Interesting sidenote about the "gotcha" 2nd shot...the photog they were posing for, probably one of my cousins holding a PnS in the bottom shot, MISSED the shot due to the shutter delay...

Wow - really enjoyed looking through all of these and how lucky were you to be there. Were most or all of these shot with the 70-210? It's great that you were able to photograph the eventual winners of both the men's and women's tournaments - Federer and Williams.
I didn't see any photos of Roddick - you not catch any of his matches?

Thanks. There's a couple I took with the 75-300 in the Federer/Soderling and Murray/Wavrinka games but otherwise 70-210 all the way [except the obvious wide angle shots].
As you say, nice to have seen both mens' and ladies' champions whilst we were there, but no joy with catching Roddick.

I got this idea from Paul/Hondafans....
a quick and clean fix to zoom creep...works great on my 70-210 so thought I'd pass it on here...
http://www.instructables.com/id/Lens_creep_fix_for_Canon_EF_28_135mm_f35_56_IS_/
The only additional instruction I have is that you might have to loosen 2 of the screws on the zoom barrel to be able to slip the band under it...
I only needed 3/4" slipped under it for just the right amount of friction...
Here's Paul's post...

The band I used for the 70/210 is 1 inch in diameter unstretched....and it is very thin plastic that stretches even thinner when wrapped around the lens....

I've been looking around for this lens. Live in a smaller market, so I'm not too hopeful for CL or classifieds. I did see one on KEH, but it was rated bargain.
Does anyone have experience with their bargain grade or any other leads on picking up one of these lenses?

Personally, I'd choose the 70-210 even if the 55-250 was at the same price. I find that the USM on this lens is priceless and the IQ is better IMO.
More samples from me. Horses again, of course.
70-210 and 40D (some USM in post, I don't have the originals with me but they were nicely sharp to start with)

This is my favorite lens. One day I hope to go the L route but the 70-210 won't be first lens I'll change. It'll be my 28-105 which I'll sell to buy a 24-105 L. I don't even know if I'll ever get a 70-200 L with the 70-210 that's serving me so well as it is.

I love mine as well. And I've recently figured out that it's an easy one to get the front element off of for dust removal. Mine had accumulated enough to bug me, and I decided to take a shot at it. Piece of cake. Was able to clean off the underside of the front element, and the top side of the next one down.

There are 3 screws on the outside of the lens barrel, and then three more after you get the top piece off. Probably the hardest part was locating a screwdriver with a small enough head to remove those screws without stripping them. After that, grab your lens pen or lens cloth and go to work! I don't think the dust was affecting the images any, but there was just enough that it bothered me. I was very happy with the result.
Interesting. I'll need to give that a shot as well as mine's "full-o-dust."

The biggest advantages of this 70-210mm lens compared to the L counterparts are thr size and color! It's not a "OMG!" kind of lens, so it helps you to keep a low profile.
Sharpness, big aperture and low weight are kind of very welcomed bonuses.
I never felt a need for any L lenses. They're normally prohibitively expensive where I live (Brazil), also. Luckily, I have some friends who come and go from Canada and can bring me used stuff I buy at eBay. And since I'm a pretty good eBay deal hunter, it ended up by being worth the extra...

I still really like this lens and wonder, like Caiguar, whether a 70-200 f/4 would really be much better?

70-200 f4 might be better in some ways (build quality, weather sealing, controlling CA) - but I don't know about MUCH better, especially from an IQ standpoint.

Indeed the build quality should be considerably better. I'd almost forgotten about the CA aberration in fact, I guess that would be a plus, but whether it's a £600 plus is another matter!

When I had mine, the zoom creep drove me nuts! Other than that, the build was sturdy and the USM was second to none. The bokeh was noticeably better than the 55-250mm IS which I replaced it with. I basically traded bokeh, USM and build for better sharpness and range.

I've got the zoom creep licked with a black rubber band placed in the right spot, but you are right, it was a pain until I read about the rubber band trick. I don't think that the 55-250mm IS would track moving subjects very well either with is micro-motor focusing....whereas the 70-210 does quite well with ring USM.
The 70-210mm also has those faster apertures......which can do things that IS cannot.

Went to the zoo today with my 70-210mm and had a nice day. At our local zoo you have to shoot most animals through a chain link fence....so that adds some focusing issues and difficulties. I love how quickly and accurately this lens focuses.
I always get a kick out of people at the zoo trying to take photos of all the animals with their cell phone cams. Either their standards for photography are low or they just got the phone. :) I cannot stand today's phones trying to be everything to everyone....phone, pc, camera, GPS, mp3 player......give me a break and put your 'smart phone' away, especially when you are driving....gets down from soapbox.

The CA on this lens is actually quite horrific under certain conditions, but I'm willing to overlook things like that if the price is right. The zoom creep is also rather annoying. What's this rubberband trick I keep hearing about? Aren't there adjustment screws on the lens that will help with this issue?

I believe there has only been one lens with those exact numbers (70-210mm f/3.5-4.5). It is a ring type of USM mechanism and does have full time manual focusing.

Yes they are full time manual focus, If you wish to tweak the focus yourself you can but the auto focus works just fine on mid range EF canon lenes.

Maybe I'm misunderstanding (this is the photography newbie in me)... but does "full time manual focus" mean that its *always* manual focus and you can't use auto focus, or does that mean its simply capable of full-time manual and you can still use AF on it, correct?
Goincarcrazy
19th of February 2010 (Fri), 16:04
It means that if you have it on Autofocus, you can still rotate the focus ring for adjustments and such without hurting the AF motor.

I've had a chance to use this lens quite a bit recently. I must admit, for $200, it's awesome. There's definitely a LOT of CA when using it, and the colors don't really pop. I find myself spending a lot of time in post processing making the photo look the way I want it to look, way more-so than any of the other lenses I own. Either way, it's a hell of a bargain. Hi all.
Love some of the pictures in this thread, and was one of the reasons I went ahead and bought this lens. For the price I paid I have no complaints so far. When I shot these pics my friend had a much better Nikon set up, but for the price he paid for body/lens I am more than happy with my investment, especially as I am a noob to this type of photography. shot with the 70-210 lens on an XSi body
Thanks to all for the information on this site, been very helpful.

I noticed something great yesterday when I replaced my 40D with a 50D. This lens absolutely rocks! It totally can squeeze the detail with the increased MP count.
I tried to compare 18-55 IS @ 55mm & 17-85 IS @ 70mm & 70-210 @ 70mm and I noticed that with same aperture 5.6 the 17-85 is nice and sharp in the center, but 70-210 is at least as sharp everywhere! 18-55 IS was sore loser this time, but still impressive with the 100$ that I got it. Of course those two not so tele's were wide open and 70-210 was stopped down, but even when I stopped the 17-85 to f/8 it still didn't par anywhere else than in the center. Wide open my 70-210 @ 70 is not as sharp as 17-85 IS @ 70 wide open, but hey... the 17-85 with its f/5.6 it is like a black hole compared to 70-210 with its f/3.5, and the 70-210 still manages to do well wide open.
Well I might aswell put a picture of the 17-85 IS I took with the 70-210. Clicking the picture opens a bit bigger version of it.

Just happened to spot one of these with 30 minutes remaining on eBay over the weekend and had no idea what it was. Some frantic googling turned up this thread, the Flickr group dedicated to this lens (http://www.flickr.com/groups/31869287@N00/) and a bunch of other positive information so I hit the £125 buy it now (there wasn't an auction option and I noticed there was an offer pending on it). Considering I should be able to sell my Tamron 70-300mm for £100 and the 70-210 appears to easily be more than £25 more lens it looks like it'll work out well. Plus the only other buy it now on eBay UK is £170.

Got mine in the mail today. It's a whole lot of lens for my little office, but the quick snaps I took to test it out left me with a few thoughts.
1) This thing is sharp. At 100mm and f/5.6 it holds its own with my 100L. Obviously not equally good under close scrutiny, but close enough to surprise me.
2) USM is snappy. I've also had the 28-135 and 100 f/2 USM models and the focus seems definitively faster than the former, and maybe faster than the latter. Very pleased.
3) Build quality is decent, and zoom creep is almost non-existent. That was the case with my 28-135 as well, so maybe I just get lucky with that.
All in all, for a little over $100 I'm extremely happy to have this in the collection. It breaks 2 of my 3 rules about "investment" lenses (constant aperture, internal zoom/focus, USM/HSM) but at this cost I can deal with it, and the 3.5-4.5 aperture isn't far off from a constant 4.
Here's a 100% crop composite of the two 100mm lenses, with half the books from the 70-210 and half from the 100L.

f/4.5 isn't fast enough when you're out of ambient light and you're trying to shoot at 210mm. You need at least a 1/200th shutter speed to get a sharp picture at that zoom, and in most cases even at ISO 1600 you can't pull it off, unless you have a tripod handy, and even then this thing shakes quite a bit on a tripod fully extended.

IS in this scenario only helps one side of the equation as well, it will prevent your shaking from blurring the photo, but if you have a fast moving subject - IS does nothing to stop that action - that is where you need the faster apertures as well. f/4.5 at 210mm is certainly better than f/5.6 on the kit zoom...
I want an f/2.8 zoom at some point, but in the meantime, this 70-210 fits the bill. I shoot probably 5% of my shots (if that) in light that requires ISO 1600. So I would prefer a feature in my zoom (USM focusing speed) that I can use to get better photos in the other 95% of my shots in good light.

Yeah, I agree. I've found myself shooting in this scenario a lot lately so it's been annoying me. I used to be all about huge apertures, but lately I've been thinking IS would be more useful on a long zoom. Being able to pull off a handheld shot at 1/4 shutter speed @ 200mm is pretty awesome, no one can argue this.

A lot of people argue that the f/4 IS version is optically better than the f/2.8, only because it's a MUCH newer lens in terms of when it was developed and manufactured. I don't know if that's true. I've shot with both, and they're both amazing pieces of glass. Way too hardcore for my wallet though.

I have heard that as well.....re: the f/4 IS version. At this point in time though its more like which yacht can't I afford - the big yacht or the really big yacht.

Hi,
just found the thread and want to contribute, too.
You can shoot other things than people and animals with the lens, too ;)
[Edit: sorry, just scrolled through all of the thread and did see some other examples :) ]

I really loved walking around on the flower exhibition all day with just this lens.

Since the topic came up early in the thread: I do see some CA at longer focal lengths - it was noticeable on the glacier shots. But given the bargain the lens was (100€ with a bit of dust inside and a minor scratch on the front lens)...
Cheers,

My daughter likes to play this game where she won't look at the camera when I'm trying to take a picture of her... but she really wants me to take the picture. Somehow I caught her swinging her head by and grabbed the best shot I've ever taken of her.
I was borrowing the lens from my dad while deciding if I wanted to buy a zoom that went up to 200mm. Yeah, I did after this.
