Hi

I bought now a 70-210 also, for my 550D.
Inside the lens, there are some dust, do you have a repair manual, or some sample photos, how can I clean it?

Thanks

Bye

If the dust is behind the front element you can easily remove it to clean there.

There are three screws around the head of the zooming portion of the lens - undo them with a small screwdriver and lift the plastic ring off.
There are another six similar screws underneath. Three appear to hold the front element glass into a plastic mount so leave those alone, but the other three hold the plastic mount to the rest of the lens. Undo these three and lift the plastic mount off, bringing the front glass element with it.
You can then clean the back of the front element and the front of the element still inside the lens body.

I personally don't think that you will regret the decision. I would have this lens over the kit quality 55-250 any day of the week. Wait until you see the focusing speed for the first time....you will forget the IS in no time......

Did not have a chance yet to test the lens in sports enviroment (tennis match or wildlife) but yes, the focus speed is amazing and silent.

In lower light it makes very dificult to take sharper pictures on stationary objects compared to the EFS IS lens. Well, thats why i kept the 18-55 IS lens fdor now

Many thanks! I'll try to check it. Yes, the dust behind the front lens, so it could be, that in the short future, I'll leave it as it is.

I highly doubt the dust you are describing would have ANY effect on your photos. Dust in lens elements is not the same as dust on your sensor in that respect....

Personally I would leave it alone and not risk disassembly issues for something fairly non-consequential.

It's so simple on this lens you might as well just do it.

Pic doesn't show up???

I also picked up this lens. It's a nice little piece, though mine has zoom creep. A little soft at the long end and softer than the 55-250 it replaced (also no IS), but the front element doesn't rotate, and it has MUCH better color and contrast than the 55-250. Also, FTM focusing and very quick AF. Great little lens.

Just bought a 70-210mm f3.5-4.5 through craigslist for $60. There was some fungus growth on the front element, so took it all apart and cleaned it up. Hopefully that takes care of the fungus, but since cleaning lens seems brand new. clean sharp images, loving it so far.

Apples to Oranges. The 55-250 is an EF-S lens with a much newer design and IS. I'd rather take an older EF lens because of the metal ring as opposed to plastic. People seem to get pretty good results out of the 55-250 though, and having the IS is very nice on a longer lens.

Clay

The 55-250 is a KIT lens. IS alone does not a good lens make.

Advantages of the 70-210:

Better build quality -

Full Time Manual Focusing -

Internal Focusing -

Ring USM Focusing Motor - Fast and Silent -

Distance Scale -

Faster Apertures - better shots in low light with moving subjects -

Not EF-S - will work on more Canon digital bodies

I could keep going here.......I'll take my 70-210 any day of the week over a kit lens with IS added.

Canon added IS to the 18-55 kit and the 55-250 kit lenses to compete price point wise with all the manufacturers that were selling in-body image stabilized bodies for donuts. Canon should have pushed IS down the chain way before they were ever forced to by other manufacturers.

Too many consumers think IS is the end all be all of better photos. Its not.

w7cma
16th of March 2011 (Wed), 11:13
bauerman has it figured out, consumers also think mega pixels is the answer. I went from 15 MP 50D to 4 MP 1D and 8 MP 1D2 and have never looked back, but that's another subject.

Thanks for the insight people. My brother is upgrading from an old D60 and needs some lenses so I was thinking of passing my 55-250 IS along to him. My original thought was to get a 70-200 F4L to replace it but this looks like it might be a less expensive alternative.

geeky
16th of March 2011 (Wed), 13:09
Mayt444, if you have that urge and want for a 70-200 f4l, this will not suffice. I know this because I bought the 70-210mm (i actually bought 2) as I wanted a telephoto and the f3.5-4.5 and USM were the selling points. The first one I purchased had fungus growing in it so I quickly sold it off, second one I purchased was pristine, and a great piece of glass.

But the more I used it and compared photos from this and a 70-200 f4l, I still wanted the f4l. And I jad a wedding to shoot, so decided to sell the 70-210 and purchase the f4l. I am not disappointed or regretting my actions. I probably had the 70-210mm for 2 weeks before I bumped up to the f4l.

Don't get me wrong though, this lens is AMAZING and I would consider it a "poor mans L" but the zoom creep and non-fixed length were bothersome to me.

w7cma
16th of March 2011 (Wed), 13:29
This lens will never replace the 70-200 f4L in build and speed but it is a very good second choice for an amateur with limited funds. You can fix the lens creep very easily, here is a link how to adjust it.

Nice comparison...

It seems that though the exposure settings different (5 vs. 5.6) making the 210 a bit brighter than the 250, the wider F-stop does make the out-of-focus background more apparent there in the 210...

I think part of the problem with the 55-250 is that at the cheaper price points, the QA is much lower. There are some crazy sharp 55-250s out there (just check out the one photozone reviewed) but then a lot that look like the one in the link above.

I keep trying to find a good 70-210 lately. THey are hard to find! I hesitated on one a few months back and I haven't seen one since!

Would anyone be kind enough to provide more comparisons? I'm leaning a bit to the 70-210 for the ring USM and better build quality but the 55-250 does seem like a sharp lens with IS and with the $100 rebate it's tempted me more.

WT21

I've had both the 55-250 and the 70-210. On a crop camera, a big difference is the short end. 55 vs. 70 is pretty different.

The 210 has better contrast and color than the 55-250. It also has a non-rotating front element which (if memory serves the) the 55-250 didn't.

I loved the 55-250 and some of my favorite shots came from it. The 70-210 is faster and more sure focusing, but the focal length range of the 55-250 is very useful. They're both super cheap. You can't really go too wrong on either. The 55-250 for the focal length and IS (oh! and weight and also less zoom creep!), the 70-210 for a bit better IQ, non rotating element and faster, surer focusing.

I had finally saved up £520 but couldn't decide on which lens to pull the trigger on. Buy a 70-200F4 L or buy a decent macro lens, as both are on my hit list, but which to buy first.

Walking round a csr boot sale at the weekend a stall was selling a
70-210 3.5-4.5 for £35. ($60) Decision made, the F4 L could wait a few more months, off to buy a macro

I'm now testing the lens and my first impressions on the results are trully *positive*. Zoom creeps a little and a bit old design, but nothing important... :-)

hey everyone, i recently say this lens for sale for about $90 on craigslist but the seller says it has 'a bit of fungus inside'. how much is 'abit' i really have no idea.
do you all think it would be a good investment to buy it and have it cleaned up?

Max Powers

Good investment? not really. (if you bought it for 90$ and cleaned it yourself, then sold it, you could make 60$ maybe)

If it's just inside the first lens then it's super easy to clean. You could totally do it yourself.

For 90$ (as long as the fungus is just inside that first piece of glass), it's a steal. If you are looking for an inexpensive zoom with decent optics.

I'm moving out of Canon, so mine is for sale (see the sell forum). The ONLY reason I'm selling it is because I'm moving out of Canon. It's a keeper lens otherwise.

If I'm not mistaken, WT21 bought that lens from me. Glad to see it making the rounds. It's an amazing little lens.

I'm very happy with the lens!

EDIT: Due to a huge SNAFU with USPS, I ended up getting my lens from another seller instead of WT21.

I am wondering about Canon's "Peripheral Illumination Correction" for this lens (70-210 f/3.5-4.5) on the T1i & 60D. Neither of these bodies will load PIC through the EOS utility. PIC is available for its sister lens, the 28-105 f/3.5-4.5. Why isn't it available for the 70-210 f/3.5-4.5? Some much older lenses are listed. This lens could really use it from 3.5 to about 5.0. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I would say that as the lens stopped production to be replaced by the 70-200L in 1996 it is a little old to have included in Canons DPP where as the 28-105 f3.5 is or was still in production until recently

Thanks for the reply Steveod. That DOES make sense. I am just in the habit of leaving PIC turned on with all my lenses. I can make corrections in LR3, if the need arises.

Taken on my 30D in AI Servo mode with the 70-210mm while my daughter was pedaling past me at a pretty good clip....probably a little "hot".......or blown out in spots. The ring-USM focusing on this lens has always impressed me...

love this lens it is sharp and the auto focus even on my old 1D classic is real fast, coupled with a 24-70L it covers most situations

So I've finally picked up this lens, it's my first zoom lens despite owning my camera for a year and a half now.

Quick question, this is also my first USM lens. On my lens I've noticed that unlike the non USM the manual focus ring doesn't stop. It just keeps going, though noticeably more resistant. Is this normal?

This seriously has to be the best value lens out there. I've constantly seen it go for under $150 these past couple of months for a (judging by most these pics here) pretty sharp lens, good aperture, and real USM. Build quality is also really solid, though the zoom creep is annoying.

Steveod

Yes Appleanche it is normal on this type of USM for the focus ring to behave as you describe ,have fun with your new toy.

Here are a few shots with the 70-210 on a 5D mk2. I can't say anything negative about this lens, aside from the fact that I wish it had IS, but for the money it is really awesome.

Little bit of CA on that grille, but I didn't make any attempts to remove it in PP

Is there a lens profile or something to remove CA in Lightroom?

I'm noticing a bit of it on my first couple of shots.

This is the first non rainy day here so I'll be sure to run to the park and try it out!

No. This lens is way too old and obsolete for that.

No. This lens is way too old and obsolete for that.

Figured so - wasn't sure if there were any custom ones available or something.

CA seems to be worst on far away objects that are relatively small in the frame.

That being said, I've had a couple of days to use it and some of the shots are amazingly sharp, some of the sharpest shots I've personally taken.

The autofocus is great.. the zoom creep isn't as annoying as I thought.

Only default sharpening on LR4

Indoors, ISO400, 210mm, 1/50.. f4.5 probably got lucky with the sharpness here.

http://i.imgur.com/F1spPl.jpg (http://i.imgur.com/F1spP.jpg)

Same default Sharpening - not a great picture by any means but just seeing the 100% on the flower center is eye opening!

ISO100, 75mm, 1/400, f3.5

That's pretty impressive on the 1/50 shutter speed indoor shot, unless you were on a tripod. If you weren't, you have very steady hands...

No tripod, yeah I'm not sure how it wasn't a blurry mess, sometimes you get lucky.
