I'm going there in July...it's going to be hot, so thankfully I'll be practically forced to shoot early/late in the day. Nice shots SYS.

I really like these SYS. Just a curious question, Do you have to pay to go to this National park? This one of the places I would like to go and visit in the future. I'm so jealous! Great shots!

Thank you for your comments. Yes, you do have to pay for each and every NP's. If you do plan on visiting more than 2 NPs in one year, it's definitely cheaper to buy an annual pass.

Since there are other beautiful NPs nearby, you might just want to consider this option. At the time I visited here, I bought the annual pass for something like $50. With it, I visited about 7 NPs afterwards (it was about $20 per each NP visit then, so you can see how economical the pass was).

I went to a nearby Bryce Canyon after the Arches, and you can see the photos here that I just posted yesterday:

Definitely worth visiting. Because I messed up my shots of the Delicate Arch, you don't see it here, but that's probably the most popular Arch there.

And I agree with your advice. To anyone going there or to Bryce or Zion: DRINK LOTS OF WATER!

Nice series, you didn't say if you stitched or cropped the panoramic ones.

Only criticism would be that in the first two in particular the saturation is quite overdone to the extent that the colours look unnatural.

In the fourth however, the colours of both the rock and the sky are spot on. Was the difference in post processing deliberate?

Again, your observation is right on the money! I was aware of the over-saturation on the first set of images, and I thought about lessening the effect, but then I changed my mind. These were all taken with my P & S camera (Canon A80). The panos were stitched using the PhotoStitch that came with the camera purchase.

The "Windows" and the "Landscape Arch," on the other hand, I decided not to oversaturate (although they're slightly, but not as much). Interestingly, at my Flickr site, the oversaturated ones are what the general people give more attention to and the "awards." But that's an entirely (although very interesting) different issue. :D

Yes, it's interesting. I also find that to be the case on this forum. The more saturated images do tend to get the most praise. I seem to be in a minority in that I prefer more natural tones.

Can I join the small minority too?

SYS,

I just got to go back to Arches with my DSLR! Last time was in 2001 with my trusty EOS100 and lots of Velvia!

The saturation could well be spot on given the intensity of the light and the rock colours... they certainly have apostcard feel about them - esp with the framing,. #1 is my fave. Did you get anywhere else around Moab?

For me it depends on the subject matter and the purpose of EACH and every image... Sometimes I succeed and sometimes (well, more like oftentimes) I fail. That's why it's so critical to have other people look at them and critique.

As for the more saturated images receiving more praise, have you gone into the "Explore" part of the Flickr.com and see what makes up the majority of these "praise-worthy" collection? ;) Lately I've gotten a couple of images being selected there (and those weren't saturated ones!!).

These were all taken about three years ago with a P & S camera that I had (my beloved Canon A80!). Since then I decided to become more serious about photography and upgraded my gear to DSLR and all the rest that you see in "My Gear" link.

Since going DSLR from a P&S snapper of my kids, I feel the urge to return to every locations that I had been to (like 15 national parks and monuments) in the past 5 years....

I don't mind oversaturating some of the photos from such places as I actually have the intention of turning some of these into postcards and calendars.

No, I didn't get around the Moab area at all. The Arches was our first stop on a long 2 weeks' automobile trip that took us next to Bryce, Zion, Red Canyon, Las Vegas, San Diego, Disneyland, Puerto Nuevo, Mexico, Grand Canyon, Petrified Forest NP, Santa Fe, Bandelier NM, and then finally home sweet home in Colorado Springs TOTALLY exhausted at 2 a.m.

I've recently posted some images from the Grand Canyon and Bryce here...

Very nice shots. You didn't get my favorite though (Double Arch); and beside adding framing, what additional PP did you do to these? Landscape needs to be seen sooner rather than later. They don't expect it to be around too much longer. I hope to catch it later this summer.

These images were from my old p&s camera three years ago with poor jpeg results. I decided to revive them with some PP, basically cropping, shadows/highlights, contrast, noise reduction, USM -- the degree of application all depending on the image being treated.

I'm going back to these old images and reviving them, because it's not likely that I'll be returning to these NP's anytime soon with my upgraded gear.
