Ian,
Here are a couple of test shot for you from your new Canon EF 100 f/2.8 macro lens. I was impressed with the macro shots you can take with this lens without having to get very, very close to the subject like I have to do with my Sigma 50 f/2.8 macro lens.
This shot was taken from about 2 feet away. The flower was the size of my hand (which is small since I'm only 5' 5"):

I got a little closer for this shot.

Here I was about 8" away from the flower.

This flower was really small. About the size of a Canadian "loony".

I think you're going to be very, very happy with your new lens and I'm sure you're going to be taking a lot of pictures of flowers and bugs in your yard and all over, including the weeds, etc. if you can't find any colorful flowers to photograph. But just spare us the cockroach shots, OK?

I forgot to mention one other thing. I've never been able to get shots like this before with my flash. But thanks to Scottes' recommendation, I bought a Lumiquest Promax Ultrasoft Pocket Bouncer for the flash and it really works very well in reducing the harsh shadows that a straight flash would produce. Thanks, Scott! :)

Hah!! I just ordered the last one from B&H! :)
OK, j/k, but I did just order the Lumaquest Promax "kit". And a couple of Tamron lens caps (they have inner thumb and finger notches so you can remove them with the lens hood on, I hope).
Anyway, back to the subject at hand, this Macro lens is definately on my short list of things I need real bad (right in front of Macaroni and Cheese). Those shots are fantastic!

Just happen to have slotted in a trip to the local photo shop this morning. Might was well add the Ultra Soft Bounce to the list.
Going to have a lot of fun with that lens

You're very welcome. It's nice to see someone gain from all the incorrect equipment I've purchased. :)
I take it that these were taken with the Lumiquest? I originally thought they were natural light. Preety cool shots.

Yup, those were shots taken with the 550EX flash and the Lumiquest Ultrasoft Pocket Bouncer. I was really impressed with the soft lighting produced the first time I used it last week taking flower pics with my Sigma 50mm.
From now on, my motto is going to be, "Why buy a lot of useless equipment when Scott can do that? Just go with the one he finally ends up using."

Tom, you don't understand. I'm just a surrogate mother. All I do is carry the baby to full term and then delivery her to Ian when the time comes. Once she's off my hands, she's Ian's responsibility! 8)
I'm trying to stay as emotionally unattached as I can, if you know what I mean. Separation from anything you've grown attached to can be very painful, that's why.

I'd be upset if I wasn't laughing so hard...
OK, we'll cut the next one off and zip right past the mistakes. Take a look at the Wimberley Shape Shifter Flash Brackets - the ultimate in brackets for macro and such. http://www.rue.com/flashbrackets.html
But who the hell wants to spend $300 on a flash bracket ? ! ? ! ? !
I want one real bad... And a 550EX because the 420EX just isn't cutting it.
