WOW!! (no it's not a new bottle of perfume)

My firewire cardreader from SanDisk arrived today and I went out side and filled up my 1Gb card to see how it would handle it and boy can I tell you it is fast! If anyone hates waiting for file transfers this little cardreader is brilliant. I recommend it highly. If you have any questions let me know.

I would make more sense if you were to say:

A full 1GB card from (name of your card and speed) only took XX:xx:xx ( minutes:seconds:hundreds) to download to my computer.

Then we could compare. Just saying it's fast tells ... um, what?

Where are the numbers? :)

K here are the details:

SanDisk Firewire Ultra Card Reader
1Gb Ultra II Card (full)
Transfer time: 00:02:26

That's 2 min and 26 seconds to transfer a full 1Gb Ultra II Card.

That's 8.26Mb per second

That's pretty fast in my books

Alan,
LEXAR Media™ CF reader:

http://home.comcast.net/~kenchevy/cfreader.jpg

Delkin eFilm Pro™ 512MB card (full) 1:55 dang near as long as your 1GB card.
Lexar 32x 1GB card (full) 4:21 ... :( 2 minutes longer than your reader. I have an Ultra II™ 1GB on order, will see how that works with this CF card reader. Looks like I may be buying a new reader.

Thanks for the numbers Alan.

Wow! Thanks for sharing! We must have one of those!

Found some prices from a link on their website ... thought I'd share so you guys new the range ... The model number on the middle one confuses me, and it's a much higher price ... but I couldn't figure out any differences on the website, of course I may have missed something .... are there different ones Alan?

Well here is the latest news.

You can buy them off sandisks web site at:

http://www.sandisk.com/retail/ultra-firewire.asp

After looking at it again it looks like the slow link in my uploads is the card itself. The SanDisk Ultra II's have a 9mbs upload (which is right in line with what I produced with the test) so if you have faster cards then you would get even faster uploads. So there are two factors in your upload speeds.

the speed of the card
and the readers connection to the computer.

There are some other firewire readers out there but not really as nice or as compact and it came with a nice little carrying pack.

This is a very high recomendation for those who don't like to wait for their computers to upload.

Update:

My CardBUS32 adapter for the notebook (P4 2.66GHz/1GB ram).

Lexar 1GB CF card 32x WA: 2min 55 seconds. I would suppose the 32x is the problem with the time on it. MUCH faster than my Lexar Media™ FW reader. I am gonna have to get one of those new Sandisk™ readers for at home on the desktop computer (P4 2.66GHz/1GB ram). I ---HATE--- waiting for files to upload to the HD from the CF card!

Thanks again for sharing that info Alan!

Way to go on the new purchase I am positive you will not be dissapointed. And the thing is pretty sexy looking also. Great job in product design.

Well, I just did my test. WOW!! I already have the scandisk 6-1 card reader and I now have the new scandisk firewire reader....Here is what I came up with: I used two Scandisk Ultra II cards, a 512 & 1 gig. Here are my results.

512mb
Firewire reader(new)
20 secs download time

512mb
6-1 reader
3 mins download time

1 gig
Firewire reader(new)
2 mins

1 gig
6-1 reader
11 mins download time

The gig card wasn't completely full.

I would say this is a fast card. So fast I purchased 2, I have two PC's and I have 9 CF cards, including a new 2 gig card. I will use both firewires to download at the same time if I shoot a lot, other times I will take one with me when I get a laptop.

This is a fast reader.

There is one drawback, the cord for the device is really short.

The cord is short but it is a standard firewire so you could just purchase a longer one for a permanent instalation on your desk if you like. I use my reader with my New PowerBook 15" with Superdirve... Great combo

I have been using the sandisk firewire reader for a few months. Great device and really fast. I had been using the camera and USB and it just got painful.

I looked at several readers but the sandisk matched my powerbook the best :D

I've also had one of those sandisk cuties for about a month and wow is it good. I only had USB 1.0 before. What I really like about it is that I can more or less use the CF Card like a drive.

Now I am set. I picked up the 6ft firewire cables with lights and they reach just fine. The lights for the cables are blue too. It looks really cool with the lights out.

Thanks again for this post, you have made my life easier.
