View Full Version : Size of image files

Hello,
I’m having problems understanding how to size images for uploading. I’m assuming that each photo needs three files (thumb, micro-thumb, and regular). Can someone please verify that that assumption is correct, and if so, what are the recommended dimensions for each of the sizes?
Thanks!

See Pekka's answer to my question.

This action creates 6 images (same sizes as Pekka's exhibitions). I created a directory structure on my PC that matches the one on my server (I used the same structure as Pekkas D30 Photos directory). You will need to change the save and export commands in the action. I then upload the whole directory and select 'don't overwrite' for any existing files.
Whole thing is very easy

Thanks for your reply. I did download and install the Photoshop Action and successfully modified the save commands to match my directory structure. However, my original photos must be of a different size than Pekka's and yours... my modified images (after running the Photoshop action) do not appear to be of an appropriate size. I'm not sure what version of PhotoShop the action was created for (I'm running 7), so perhaps there are other variables that I need to modify(?) I'm quite the PhotoShop novice, so it is quite likely that I'm simply doing something wrong.
I continue to experiment with PhotoShop and Pekka's action and I remain confused about how many images are required for uploading, as I can only see the need for three (micro-thumb, thumb, and 'original'). In addition to the number of images, it would also be helpful to know what the recommended (or required) dimensions are for each of the copies.
I'm sure I'll figure this stuff out eventually, but if anyone can provide any further tips to help me along, I'd sure appreciate it.
Thanks in advance!

After researching a little further, it appears that Pekka's images are of the following size...
'full' - 4x2.667 inches @ 180 pixels/inch
'thumb' - 1.806x1.194 inches at @ 72 pixels/inch
'micro-thumb' - 0.597x0.403 inches at @ 72 pixels/inch
The original images I attempted to run the PhotoShop action on are only 72 pixels/inch, which I'm assuming is the source of my problem. Clearly there isn't much I can do about the resolution at this point, but I'll try and match the dimensions of my images as close to Pekka's as possible. Hopefully, the modified image sizes will still display properly in EE.
I remain confused as to why Pekka's PhotoShop action creates 6 images...

The nice thing about Pekka's EE is that its flexible. Its up to you how many sizes you use - you could have just one with a tnumnail if you want. Each image can have a differnet set of sizes it you want.
I 'cloned' the 6 size paths from Pekka's exhibitions (microthumb, thumb, small, medium, medium hq, big, big hq) and set them up with my own paths (I deleted the original Pekka path sizes. I then use the default action to convert into them. I often start with full size images straight out of my D60 and use the action to resize. Sounds like you are starting with already resized images ? You should then adjust the action to adjust the images to sizes that make sense for your source images.
