Here is a random selection of images hot off the CF cards. These are RAW files ported to jpg with no post (not even to clean up dirty sensor). I will post something more coherent when I'm done sorting customer images.

Nice pictures Rob. Unfortunately I had to be a spectator with all my equipment since I couldnt get a photo pass. Pretty sad looking at people carrying point and shoots holding photo passes.

Yeah there were definitely a few PS shooters inside the fence... they must have won a contest or something! :-)

Looks like Spies was enjoying his turf surfing session.

Awesome pictures for a straight conversion and no post processing.

Were the photopasses purchasable, or are the credentials required? It is interesting to hear about those with P&S cameras walking around where the pros should be.

Whats involved in getting a photo pass at a AMA event? Do you need some type of press ID?

You have to have some type of credential. Newspaper or magazine.

you can still be a pro if you have a P&S.

As Jeff said you need to have some sponsoring press outlet to request on your behalf. My situation is somewhat different, in that I supply images on "spec" to riders, sponsors, news outlets and the tracks.

AJ711 some folks have affiliations with the teams and as such can get those passes... Also some of these folks are spectators but were able to get there friend at the paper to request access for them. Then there are the photogs... probably about 25 of us in the media center from all over the country.

RadAL it's true you can be a pro and have a point and shoot but not if you're being serious about capturing on-track images.

More to Jeff's (silent) point: It's not only about picture taking but safety as well. Those of us that shoot racing on a regular basis (Jeff included) understand what is required of us to keep ourselves and others safe while we do it. Shooting on pit lane requires a serious amount of multi tasking so as not to get hit by bikes whizzing by at 50mph, not interfering with teams as they do their business and of course taking pictures. Some of those inside apex shots are less than 10 sometimes only 5 feet from a rider and in that situation a bonehead move from a "photog" can be pretty serious.

Now back to our regular program!

Thank you, and very well written.

And I, in no way, meant to infer that P&S does not allow you to take "professional" level photos.

BEAUTIFUL shots!

I may have asked you before but i cant remeber what body/lens for these shots? Or what is your most common used body lens.

Thanks

Steve I use Canon 1Dmk2 and typically 70-200L, 400L, 24-70L and a 1.4x TC depending on the the venue.

I leave my EXIF data on the images... pull one down to your computer that you like and right click it to get properties for it. You can see all of the settings of each shot including the hardware.

The shot of the ladies was taken from the pit lane looking up through the railing to the spectator level. If you look right of the frame you can see one of the verticle bars creeping into frame.

It is turn 9.... There are about 20-25 of the actual crash sequence but Infineon is displaying a few for brevity sake.

The wind on Friday afternoon was insane and I'm certain that it contributed to Ben's crash... guys were overshooting the entry to 9 left-right-center!

Jeff you either have to manual focus or use ai-servo for the fast subjects... if the subject is static I substitute one-shot for ai-servo. Focus points depends on the lens / subject. If I'm using the 400 with a 1.4x then center point is all you get. Without the 1.4x I will often use a leading focus point as I'm looking for the front of the bike/rider to most in focus. In terms of number of points used It will vary... I usually have 11 selected.

jeffbmw
25th of May 2007 (Fri), 14:15
Wow that's very helpfull, I use AI, with the single point focus, but I'm going to try a few of your technic's.

Thanks man

Jeff I think your doing fine based on the images you linked. I like your poster layouts - very creative. Probably the best technique advice I can give you is watch the 'crops' in camera. Better shoot slightly wide and crop in post than cut off a wheel or helmet. The crop on the Kawasaki poster is really nice but in my mind the Yamaha is tad off... in the first Yamaha image the front wheel and left shoulder. In the second Yama image the front tire and the checker flag are cut. These are minor nits as your technicals on those images are very good. The last image in that group you have front and rear cropped, which I don't mind in that context... again the only nit I might have is I like to show the nose of the fairing in that type of picture where the rider is the focal point... or frame/crop it farther back like the DiSalvo pic in the series I posted.

jeffbmw
25th of May 2007 (Fri), 16:08
Sweet more good information for me to absorb. I'm glade you like the layouts I do with my limited photoshop skills, as the riders really like them. Why I don't know lol but they sell.

The crop tip is a good one, I find I'm very inconsistent in this department and will work on it.... first time out cough, cough this season. So must of be rust build up on the old joints lol

Ahhh yeah that's Jason DiSalvo (#40)... very fast and skilled rider for Yamaha... the riders at this level have incredible bike control. Jason comes in at like 5 feet tall, a hundered and nuthin pounds... it's funny to see us together... I'm 6'4" / 280
