View Full Version : The thread killer

Here's a funny thing.
When I contribute to a thread on POTN, I subscribe to it by default, because I often like to follow the discussion to see where it goes. Every now and then I prune the list of threads to which I'm subscribed: file away ones that have something worthwhile that I'll want to refer to in future, and delete the rest if nothing's happened on them in a week or more.
But the funny thing is, I've noticed that in about two-thirds of the threads, the last post was mine.
Why is that, do you think?
Be as rude or creative as you like.

Many threads end abruptly with stupid comments made by me too (referring to th last post in a given thread I respond to). I just chalk it up as jumping into a dead discussion, being a day late and a dollar short with my remarks. Why beat a dead horse? It's all good. ;)
This thread will now end with this post.

Actually he is a cute kitty, but way back in my past I suffered a traumatic experience that scars me to this day. When I was but a wee lad our cat Blackie had three kittens. One was solid gray, one was a tabby, and one looked exactly like yours. My sisters and I each choose a kitten for ourselves and i choose the black and white one. Well as they grew Mom decided that two of them had to go so she put up a “free kittens sign”. Unfortunately, mine was the first to go. Maybe you took it but i doubt it as this happened many cat lives ago. But in any case, the hurt never goes away. Thanx Mom. Damaged me for life.

This probably doesn't help, but you should have chosen the grey one. Firstly, you might still have it. Secondly, it would be a lot easier to photograph than black-and-white.

Aye, but we lost one maiden unfortunately and gained a fourth male and second ginger nut, aka MC Cyber D. Not sure what that will do to the dynamics of the group. Two firey gingers out of four ;) Not sure what the !Kung will say about it either  My concern, given the balance has swung male-wards, is we spend all our time around the camp-fire eating pizza, drinking beer and watching sports on bush TV!!

What is the best way to kill off a thread? ;)Who can say? About 10 of the people who have contributed to this one claim that they find they are often the last one to post in a thread. I can't speak for the others, but I generally do not specifically try to have the last word. Indeed, sometimes I find it frustrating because what I thought could have been a good debate seems to die after my contribution. (Here's an example. (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=320580)) Maybe - and this bothers me - I might have a style that comes across as a sort of put-down, which discourages people from contributing.
Or maybe it's just the scary cat avatar.

Mark, aren't you a Mod? Can't you just lock the thread after you've posted?Me? A Mod? That's about the funniest thing I've heard all day. :)Why so? You've been here a long time, you're knowledgeable, helpful, and patient with newbies. Perhaps you need to start acting a bit more irresponsibly.

 My concern, given the balance has swung male-wards, is we spend all our time around the camp-fire eating pizza, drinking beer and watching sports on bush TV!!
Sounds like a good time to me! :D

Who can say? About 10 of the people who have contributed to this one claim that they find they are often the last one to post in a thread. I can't speak for the others, but I generally do not specifically try to have the last word. This is an interesting thread. So much meat on the bones, such depth and insight. How could we possibly let it die? This thread should be a sticky. A warning to all who dare venture here. A warning to all that the members on this forum are totally bat-shyat insane.

You haven't killed the super macro guessing thread..........yet
Grimm75
24th of May 2007 (Thu), 13:49
Oh but this thread is so much more interesting. With the macro thread there is a distinct purpose. This thread may have started with a purpose, but nows seems to exist solely for itself. Very cool.
I hear the drum again...
Now if you'll excuse me, there are other threads that have gone on quite long enough. I need to go post so everyone else will stop. :)

Grimm, if I had to guess I'd say those drums you keep hearing are really the pounding indignation of things needing release from your colon. Sit on the can for a few minutes, and this to shall pass. ;) This thread is an experiment in futility. I've already won. You're all just too late. Move along and let it die in peace.

Thread murder...harsh. How does one really kill a thread? By changing the topic to something so stupid people read it and just don't care anymore. they feel they have wasted their time and that's that. Simple as pie if you can just get their minds off of why they are there in the first place which who really knows why...

I agree to some extent - I think in most of our cases it's along the lines of wanting further discussion, then no one takes the bait. Such is life, I suppose.

If you want to see a thread go ignored, the sure fire way to do that is to make it sticky!

I think it is an onomatopoeic word referring to the noise of something of modest size and consistency falling into a small bowl of water - something lavatorial perhaps?

Cheeky Plunker:
Cheeky - someone who plays pranks, is usually up to no good, nefarious in a jovial way, a prankster, a jokester, a white and wheat toaster...
Plunker - A funny name for a friend who drinks too much and pisses himself. What a plunker! Not as harsh as wanker or tosser, but heading in that direction.

The new avatar is just a "prototype" that must still be refined.

I think he should carve the LM out of a picture of his man panties. You know how they paint letters to look like the flag? Same principle. It is his platform for greatness, after all. Maybe shop in little bits of cream, sliding down the sides of the letters. And the whole thing should be fusia and turquiose!

Come now Stewart. You have to admit...the way he's hunched over, with his tongue sticking out and his head cocked to one side. It's like an episode of Red Dwarf, and he's just moments away from licking himself inside out. Now I'm a cat lover, and so all cats are cute.
