I m looking for reasonable price with good quailty tripod i have coupon 10% off at local photo store, say under $50-80.

Easy to carry around in backpack or strap hold, nothing TOO BIG to carry.

I will not use it often...

Any recommend? What brand to AVIOD ?

I have XTI 400D 17-85 IS.

Thank you!
Jake

Good quality or good price, take your pick. I recommend a Bogen 3021 bpro. Its tall enough for most folks, the center column can be shortened so it can be laid flat on the ground for macro work, with the head mounted sideways. do you want a ball head or a pan head? With a 488 rc2 ball head delivered was $270 from B&H photo supply.

I just picked up a 3021pro and love it but thats way out of his budget, maybe look into a used bogen 3001 they can be found on ebay pretty cheap $50 or so and you can pick up a head for about another $30

There's plenty of threads here but to sum a few of them up for you:

Consider weight and height in your search for a tripod. Consider getting a ballhead. Consider your budget (between the ballhead and the tripod you can rapidly approach $1000). Also consider what your current and future plans for use of this tripod. Will it be one you want to travel with or will it be one you only use indoors/studio? A key factor to weigh is you're putting expensive gear up on a tripod so don't look at being too frugal with buying a sturdy tripod. Good luck and ask plenty of questions here.

geez, whats different between ball head or a pan head eh ?? i ll try search it in here.

height is not matter to me, i m just guess 5ft will be enuff and light weight if possible to find one.

Yeah I dont want spend too much money on tripod.

Its just for self timer picture of our family on beach, camp, once a while indoor etc where theres no one can take a picture for us.

Saw one by B&H photo online $40 by canon tripod, i dont mind :) . http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/240474-REG/Canon_6195A003_Deluxe_Tripod.html

From the link you provided:
Maximum Height....... 59.3" (150.6 cm)
Maximum Height w/o Column Extended.........47.6" (120.9 cm)
Load Capacity.......Not specified by manufacturer

You want a tripod whose max height w/o column extension a few inches below your eye level. And as you can see the load capacity on this tripod is not even specified thats a major reason to avoid it.

I know this is counter intuitive. But if you are new to tripods and are afraid the spend the money on a good set of legs and head, buy the cheapest one you can find to try it out. You can get the MX1000 series for $20 from walmart which is pretty good and I know will hold a 20D. You can get even cheaper ones from some online stores.

The purpose of the walmart tripod is to help you see if you like shooting with a tripod. For folks who havent shot with one its an awesome experience but that also means you gotta lean to love carrying it around, setting it up, shooting and taking it down. And a $20 walmart tripod is perfect to see if its your cuppa tea, rather than a $220 Bogen 3021 with a 488RC2. If you really like using the walmart one then the slightly heavier but immensely more stable Bogen gear would be a good step up.

JakeIf I want to get the best bang of the $40 + $7 shipping, i would go for AT-L104T (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ih=010&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWA%3AIT&viewitem=&item=200109490656&rd=1&rd=1) and ATH-05H (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ih=010&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWA%3AIT&viewitem=&item=200108076642&rd=1&rd=1). Some folks have done some reviews here, do a search here for "Amvona" or "Dynatran".

You get to pick 2 out of "stable", "light" and "cheap." Basically, I'm getting that your requests are "light" and "cheap" which is probably a waste of money. for $50-80 you are going to have just about an impossible time getting something that is any good.

A good starter is something like the 3021 recommended with a 488 ballhead. The ballhead alone exceeds your budget.

Found a few reviews done by our fellow POTN'ers. Turns out more members, who are looking for good quality budget tripod, use Amvona than i thought.

I was in the same boat I wanted to spend no more than $100 for a tripod/head and I ended up waiting and spending double that but I don't regret it. Shooting with a tripod is a lot of fun, great for night and low light shots I'll even use it during the day shooting landscapes. Go for the canon tripod for now its pretty cheap and you'll get to see how you like it and what you'll be using it for.
