Don't know what it's really called, but I have a question.
I have the rebel xt and I am wanting to shoot a pic and prview it instatly on my laptop. I heard you can do this with the software that came with the camera. The thing is the software is packed up in storage. Is there another way or somewhere else I can download the software to do this?
Can I even do this? LOL!
Thanks.

It is called Tethered shooting and you need to use the EOS utility to do it. You might be able to download it from Canon.

I cannot find the download for the original EOS Utility software. Anybody have a link?

How hard did you try? I Googled eos utility download and came up with this link (http://www.opendrivers.com/driver/237955/canon-eos-utility-2.0a-updater-windows-2000-xp-vista-free-download.html).

You can find the latest version of EOS Utility on Canon US site.
If you tell me which camera you have, I’ll give you the direct link.
Two things are to be remembered, though..
- You cannot install software from Canon site directly; you have to have at least some of the original software (ZoomBrowser, DPP, EOS Utility) already installed to be able to do the update.
You can play with some Registry keys, but I am not sure if you want to do that.
- Remote (tethered) shooting will not give you the PREview of the shot.
It will be the POSTview actually, you’ll see the image right after the shot is taken.

I use a 350D at the moment, and in order to shoot tethered you have to use the EOS utility like stated above, but the cool thing is that you can iuse both EOS utility and Lightroom together and have your shots go directly there.

Wow this is awesome! I wonder how they did this. Thing is, i see the pros do studio shots, and their "previews" show up on a 40" flatscreen monitor. All i got is a 14" laptop.

Did you download the software manual? It can be found by going to this (http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=DownloadIndexAct) page and then filling in the drop downs for what you are looking for.

Ok thanks everyone, got everything working finally!!
:)
I actually got the software installed by editing the registry and just downloading the update from the Canon site. Worked like a champ.

It's easier to hook it up to a tv imo.
I don't know about XT, but rebel take a while to sync the image especially if it's raw.

Could you tell me what registry settings you needed to adjust to get this to install? I have a Rebel XT and all the software that came with the camera but cannot get the Utility to install so I can't figure out how to do the tethered shooting. Any help would be very much appreciated.
Thanks

Hooking the camera up to a TV will only show the small embedded JPEG from the RAW file. Not anywhere near enough detail IMO, although I do use it from time to time, just not critical viewing.

THat's true, but CRT gives me a better crack at the exposure and how the colors actually are.
And my converted raws are pretty close to the embedded jpegs anyways.

I've been going mad trying to use Lightroom with tethered shooting. I have followed all the instructions in Martin Evening's book and still no success. The shots open up fine (and automatically) in the EOS Utility but not in Lightroom. Can anyone tell me how I can make the shots display in Lightroom and not EOS?

You need to set LR to auto-import from the folder the pictures are getting put in. I don't have LR here at work but I'm sure if you check the help menu for auto-import you'll find what you need.
