is it my studio light angle or the camera out of focus.
Please don't mind I have a lot to learn about light and studio lighting.
Taken with a 20d 50mm 1.8 lens shutter 1/50 iso 800 with tripod

1/50 is what caused the pic to be fuzzy...
try shooting at a faster shutter speed.

I might agree on that. The 50mm 1.4 is on the way. LOL!!! My wife said my old 10D took better pictures but it had a 50mm 1.4 on it.
Live and learn the hard way. should have needed sold the 1.4 with the 10d.

the F1.4 is softer at F1.8 than the 50mm F1.8 I believe.

Ok, so one person guesses motion blur, another guesses focus issue and/or wide-open lens softness.
Hard to tell from this downsized image. A 100% crop of the eyes will tell the tale.
I wouldn't blame the lens. But for sharp portraits with decent DOF you'll want to stop down to f/4 at least. You may need more light for that.

thanks to everyone for the good info. This forum has been great. It will take some trial, error and a lot of learning.

why are you shooting at ISO800 with a flash?? Drop down to ISO200 and 1/200th of a second and f/2.8
also put that light off to the side, not dead straight on -

Who said anything about flash? Could well be continuous lighting. (I presume it is)
