Two Self Portraits

Got bored today so I decided I'd try something. Not much of a background but surprisingly I managed to get half-way decent photos today. I usually can't take a decent photo to save my life, hence why I joined the forums.

I'm young and I'm learning, so be nice ;)

Your face is a bit dark on the first one, especially your left eye. Your hair is also too dark. A bit better lighting from the front would help.

The second one has better lighting. I'm not sure I like the shirt effect, but that's not the point. Nice job getting your face in focus. I have the worst time with that.

Keep trying and you'll get something good.

In #1 the plusses are that the composition is not bad, although it's bit strange for a self-portrait, and the lighting is at least tolerable. I like B&W on general principles, so you get points for that.

In #2, the lighting is much better and the pose is better. I would suggest a longer focal length and greater distance to the subject in order to keep distortion out of the question. My only beef with this image is the selective coloring. I hated it when it first became used in TV commercials and am rather glad that the majority of critics here on Critique Corner don't seem to like it either. Gimmicks don't get very much sympathy here.

#1 left a lot of upper values unused in the histogram - a good indicator that the exposure might be off. #2 was much better in that respect.

I have a love for orange and really wanted to see what it would look like when only the color of the shirt was visible. Thanks for the comments and criticism. Like I said I got bored today and figured before I ditched the G2 for a DSLR I would try and get a half-way decent photo out of it.

By all means give the Powershot a good try. I have the G5 and love it. I can take videos with it, and I can shoot in RAW mode, and it is only the higher resolution that I get from the XTi that is any real advantage over the G5. Think about it!
