always starting with flash and ending with strobes, go to strobes.
if it is for walkaround and events and outdoors, then go with 580EX2, great and so sexy for Canon DSLR's than Metz.;):p

They are vastly different IMO: The Metz is a handle mount flash ('Potato Masher'), and has 2/3 stops more power (GN 76 @ 105mm, vs GN 58 @ 105mm).
Metz built in diffuser goes down to 20mm, Canon to 14mm. Metz is slightly faster recycling according to specs. There is a reason the Metz is about 2 times the price of the Canon

I'd go with the Canon here. The Metz will not work for easy Master/Slave options. For real strobes go with AB's and a Vagabond. For great location lighting you can do it all with some 550's and 580's... I shoot with 3 580's and 1 550.
