OK, so I posted this in another thread...
I've sometimes noticed that a pic will have 50+ 'views' & 0-1 posts. If it's from a new member, I think we should encourage them with some sort of comment, even if it's just "Keep at it & have fun!", don't you?
Another member agreed with me & said that he would try to encourage new members, too. Then I started thinking that, maybe, those of you visually creative types who didn't say anything were quiet because they were "Special" in the verbal area of the brain & just can't think of anything to say. I can see where this might create a problem for me, so I'm going to try & help you all out!
First: Let it be known to all that the particularly vapid "Keep at it! And, have fun doing it!" has been Copyrighted 2004 by me, & I'd better not see any of you using it! Think up your own! Search the posts & steal someone else's if you can't come up with one!!!
On second thought, the equally general "Good stuff!" has been Copyrighted 2004, too, ˜cause sometimes I just can't come up with something interesting & different from what everyone else had already said. (Usually not a problem as we're talking about people who have only had 0-1 bits of encouragement in the first place).
Second: It is strongly recommended that such things as "LOOKS LIKE SH*T! I've used better stuff to wipe my *ss!", and "My (dog, cat, armadillo) looks better than your (kid, wife, girlfriend, wannabe model, armadillo)" should be saved for other forums where the highest IQ in the posters families is on a par with the number of appendages depicted in the pic in question (kid, wife, girlfriend, wannabe model, etc).
So, lets all take a minute or two & pass on some encouragement to the guys who posted last week & only had 0-1 replies. "And, have fun doing it!"
Oh yeah, and, lets "Keep at it!"

It's a common fact that people post more comments for people they know. They know people they know good won't take it so hard if you tell them their picture really... isn't that good :-P With a guy/girl you don't know, it's not as easy to say such, as you might bring them down, and in the worst case, scare them from posting again. Personally I have a hard time commenting "usable, but not quite good" shots.. Very often I can't see any "faults" in the image, but it just doesn't appeal to me in any way. Then it would be false to say I like it, it would be false to say it sucks, and it's hard to say what's "wrong" when I don't even know it myself.. I could of course say: "Can't find any faults, but it doesn't appeal to me". In those situations I just drop a comment, and wait until they hopefully post something I either like, or something which got faults I can put my finger on..

Frank, you nailed it. I'm somewhat special (though I rarely wear my helmet). It does impair my ability to comment on most photos, in a manner comprehendible by others. So... normally, I don't say anything. When I do, it's usually brief, as not to make my "specialness" obvious.
Is it working?

I remember my wife's grandmother. She was the kindest, sweetest woman I think I've ever known in my life. She would never say anything that might possibly offend anyone, regardless of what was actually going through her mind. If there was something she really thought was awful, and if she was really pressed to say something about it, she would fold her hands in her lap and say, "Well, (a long pause)....it's interesting."
I lay claim to that phrase and propose to use it a lot.

It's always nice to bring a smile into the world!

No, I haven't! There was something I thought of after the post, though. Maybe you could change the "My (dog, cat, armadillo) looks better than your..." to "My (dog, possum, armadillo) looks better than your..."?
Vvizard...

I know! But I hate to see someone new completly ignored which is why I started all this.

The full-face ones really make it hard to get that viewfinder up to your eye, don't they? I hate that!
Conk...
Now if I only knew the key for TM.
TM = Alt + 0153 on the numberpad. Strange, they aren't working in preview, but they do in Notepad. I first typed that in Word & copied it here. Maybe there's some hidden formating or a vBulletin problem.
Belmondo ...
"Well, (a long pause)....it's interesting."
I lay claim to that phrase and propose to use it a lot.
It's...yours!
Thanks for the input everyone. Let's not find that we've slacked off after a few weeks!

I try, but I feel unqualified to give advice most of the time. I only chime in with advice when it's something obvious or a mistake I've made for myself.
Can I lay claim to "Brilliant!!!™" ?
btw, Alt+0153 didn't work for me, but copying Laz's ™ worked just fine.

Try using the number pad (number lock light on). Nothing will happen 'till you release the ALt key.

Thanks that fixed it. I never use number pad because it is on my laptop. Thanks!
P.S.
All symbols have the character code so hit alt Character code. I knew that but I havn't used it since I had my desktop w/ number pad. Now its all coming back.

nice capture.. isn't copyrighted but, If I post..

I spent time as a young man working as an assistant to a floorlayer and to a roofer. Both tradesmen had a comment for flawed work that they saw but the customers didn't catch on to. When they spotted a major seam mismatch in a floor or shingle mis-alignment in the middle of a finished job, they'd just say "Wow!"
I have dibs on "Wow".
<submitting copyright forms now> ;)
Oh, and I don't do the people forum, because I just can't say anything nice about ugly babies and kids.

OK being a newbie, I actually look for the threads with the big 0 , and try to say something encouraging. I can't give real technical advice but it's better then nothing I suppose. Hmmm....can I have my own phrase? Being a stay home mom & neighborhood dump your kid site I spend a lot of time saying stuff like "GOOD JOB" And "Thank You for Sharing" :)

Tricky one there Beachy ... see I have used 'thanks for sharing' for a long time, both here and in day to day life, and there is a very close tie in with your rather polite 'thank you for sharing'. I am prepared to share this saying tho'. See, I tend to use mine as a form of sarcasm when someone says something I perceive as being a bit dumb or, particularly, a bit dumb and a bit or a lot rude. So, you keep it for use in cases of sincerity and appreciation and encouragement and I shall keep it for use in cases requiring sarcasm to counter dumb rudeness. Win-win :-)

I have extended the hand of win-win goodwill to Beachy above but I am now concerned about diluting the brand if you also now want a slice.
Note I have been here a while and been using that statement in a sarcastic way throughout that time. You are a mere lad in comparison :p However, if you can think of ways to use it that do not reflect either sincerity (Beachy) or sarcasm (Condyk) then there is a window of opportunity you may wish to slip through.

I went to your website, and I'll have to say I would NOT use the 'unique perspective' double talk about most of your works. Very impressive flowers and forest/stream scenes for composition and technique in your My World folder. And I particularly enjoy the cat closeup in Family & Friends!
...a minor critique...it would have been nice for cat's nose to be more in focus, but your eyes are certainly drawn to his because it is so out of focus!

I forgot to comment...the beach shots are among your weakest type of shot. Very difficult to take good beach shots, as shooters we are drawn to the beauty of the setting, but that is hard to capture sufficiently for the viewer to feel the same sense of awe.
One thing you might want to try to do is to put something into the foreground to draw the eye, positioned so that it helps to move the viewer's eye thru the scene a bit. It also helps to establish a stronger sense of scale for the viewer.
