Hello!
I have purchased the Canon 70-200mm f/2.8l IS USM (should receive this week) and will be purchasing Canon's 100MM 2.8 Macro soon. What would you people recommend for a zoom below 70mm that would give me a sharp image and fast. I was considering the Canon 24-70mm 2.8L USM, but it appears the focus is a bit slow.. All recommendations and comments are appreciated...
Thanks

There's absolutely NOTHING wrong with the Canon 24-70 f/2.8L lens design and performance. In fact, it's one of the best zoom lenses that Canon has. Focusing is NOT slow at all.

Just out of curiousity, where did you hear that the focus is slow on the 24-70L? It's a great lens and would work nicely with your 70-200mm f/2.8 IS.

What do you need more 70mm or the wider end? A good setup doesn't have to cover every mm exactly :p
Is 28mm wide enough, do you need USM/HSM, need f2.8 etc?

to me 24mm is not that wide on a crop body. even the 17mm on a crop is only 'normal wide'. but that depends on your shooting style as well.

10-22 and a 24-70
I don't know where you're getting your 24-70 info from, but my 24-70 is insanely fast focusing and a superb lens.
the 50 1.8 is slwo focussing and the kit lens is slow focussing. the 24-70 is fantastic.

Well the H - E - double hockey sticks did you hear the focus was slow on the Canon 24-70?? Of all the options at that range, the Canon's is the FASTEST!!!

The Canon 24-70 should have one of the fastest AF speeds in a zoom in this range. However, it's huge, heavy, and expensive.
Tamron has a 28-75 f2.8. It's much cheaper at under $400 and optically on a similar level as the Canon. Build quality is poor with rotating MF ring while you AF. It is lighter and smaller due to it's total plastic build. While it's a great bargain, it's a bit too long for my tastes.
Sigma has a 24-70f2.8 and a 24-60f2.8. The 24-70 is more popular at about $430 or so. Optically in the same class again. While it's built nicer than the Tamron it's not as nice as the Canon with a two stage AF to MF set up. This lens is also very big with a huge front element. The 24-60mm f2.8 version is much smaller and a bit cheaper than the 24-70, and according to Sigma, that's the real difference, it's smaller for folks who don't want a big zoom.
Personally, I find for cropped sensors, a 17-50 zoom like the Tamron 17-50f2.8 makes for a nicer "walking around" AKA "normal" zoom than the 20's-70 zooms.
Good luck

If you are keeping your crop body, take a look at the 17-55 f2.8 IS. Im suprised it hasnt been mentioned yet!

I stand corrected. I confused it with another lens I was reading about. Thanks to all who replied. You all have been very helpful!!

Actually a few reviews at B&H state that the Canon 24-70's AF is slow. I don't know why they'd say that, it's a very bizarre assessment.

Yeah Ill have to agree with the others, where and why someone would say that focusing is slow on the 24-70 is beyond me. Its the best Ive used so far. Then again it was a misread and we'll allow out:p
My next lens will be the 70-200 2.8, seems like a pretty good coverage.:D
