View Full Version : Nikon signs deal with CSI

This may be old news but havn't seen any threads related to it,

Heard on the "Lightsource" podcast via iTunes that Nikon has signed an advertising deal with the CSI TV network, (Miami, NY, Criminal Intent, etc )

Apparently the forensic camera's are all Nikon and the actors are required to wear D200 neck straps, the Macro ring flashes are obviously also Nikon, etc etc.

Nothing wrong with any of that,I suppose, just thought it is interesting, and coincidently not a bad marketing idea.

With people buying DVD sets, downloading shows from iTunes, and using Tivo, you are going to be seeing alot of these product placement deals from now on. I have no problem with Nikon getting the deal, everything else on those shows is absolute fiction so in order to be consistent with the rest of the lies they perpetuate, they might as well make Nikon look like the best camera brand ;-)

one new advert twist i've seen recently is wrist bands (for being 21+ at a concert, so you can order a beer or the like) having ads on them.

marketing will rule the world.

Too funny. I just love how they can get DNA results back in an hour. :)

I read an article while living in florida that the local grocery store was trying to sell advertising space on those little yellow stripes that deliniate the parking spaces. What a world, what a world!

They have to use Nikon flashes - Nikon cameras don't work well in low-light, so they NEED the flash to get half-way decent pictures ;-)

If they used Canon, they wouldn't need a flash ;-)

Bet seriously - I could care less what camera they use. As long as they use it like an SLR and not holding the Noink out in-front of them like a P&S.
It is a TV show... big deal - and, at least they aren't using Sony!

Nikon needs to advertise with the great unwashed.

Canon classily advertises in National Geogrpahic and lets the product speak for itself. If I saw a Canon TV ad like the Nikon one(s) I'd be floored.

Yeah, because we all know CSIs don't really use flash.....
......

Seriously though, the Miami-Dade PD uses Nikons for real. I know, i've met several detectives and investigators.

This forum is really full of blind hatred and such a smug sense of superiority... no offense guys, but Canon is not the end-all of cameras. that's why I shoot both brands.

How long have you been here? I see you joined in May but you may have been lurking long before that. POTN is a place with lots of banter. We try to not be too serious, especially in the general chat section. Don't take any Nikon hating to heart, for most of us it isn't real hatred as Jason pointed out. And if you check out the thread about why all of the Nikon vs Canon debating you might find some interesting answers. :D

Ever see a sports game? How many white lenses are there? I recently saw an ad in a photo mag from Canon stating why their lenses are white and commenting on the mass qty you see at sporting events. Nikon needs to lower their price. Plain and simple.

Funny you mention this...I'm sure this has been posted somewhere here, but Nikon should seriously play up the scene in 'Spiderman Turd' where Brock is taking photos of the blonde girl dangling from a high rise 60 something stories up:rolleyes:.

He is standing at ground level, next to the police chief...the blonde girls dad.
Scene shows the camera zooming in very close! Think the police chief/dad grabs the camera to see for himself.

Before I started this debt inducing hobby, I would have never noticed that...
Who knows maybe Nikon can get out of it by saying it was a Tamaron lens...:eek:

The single best marketing idea anyone in the photo world came up with was Canon making the white lenses. While Nikon is paying production studios to put their cameras into the world of makebelieve (okay, so maybe Canon does it too) Canon has proven without a doubt that their products rule the real world (at least the sports world) Just go to a game or look at the sidelines at an NFL, MLB, or NBA game and the white lenses outnumber the black about 8 to 1 everytime. Sony has their white lenses now too in hopes that they can make newbies think some of those pros are carrying their stuff.

I wonder if Canon has a patent on their lenses being white? Makes you wonder why no one else would then mass advertise how their lenses are white too.

Or perhaps it just wouldn't work and people would get confused and only realize Canon does dominate. :D

I actually just tried something and the results have a far larger contrast than I had imagined,.

First Google "Canon Philanthropy"

..then Google "Nikon Philanthropy"

Look closely at the huge difference in substance in the first pages of results..

then jump forward to page 6 or 7 of the resulting searches,.

Amazing.
The only time the word Nikon seems to show up is because some philanthropist is using a Nikon..

I thought CSI had been using Nikon for a long time. Every camera I've ever noticed on CSI was a Nikon. You can also tell what auto company they're using as it's very blatant. They seem to have switched between GMC and Ford SUVs during different seasons. 24 also seems obvious in their vehicle placements. I don't mind it, I actually prefer it to having the logo on someone's shirt pixelated like MTV does when reality show cast members wear apparel with non-sponsor logos.

Yeah, that is how it came across to me.

Regarding the Canon / Nikon debate, I think that pre- digital ,both manufacturers have provided the best camera equipment money can buy, and it was so for many years.

However since the advent of Digital, Canon seem to have implemented the technology much more effectively than Nikon. Then again who knows what the future holds, especially if Nikon get some decent sensors.

For me though, I've been Canon since my first AE-1 program in 1981 and no amount of CSI nonsense will change that

There are companies out there that do nothing but pitch corporate wares to the television and movie production companies. The company with the most money gets the prominent display. So what if Nikon won this one. BFD. Everyone chooses their target audience and goes after it in different ways.

Ever notice on American Idol how the Coca-Cola glasses were neatly lined up and always showed the logo to the camera. There are so many examples of this sort of advertising.

In the movie "Superman," there was a box of Cheerios on the kitchen table in teen-age Clark Kent's kitchen, and the credits had a line "Cheerios by General Mills."

Does this mean that if you eat Cheerios you'll grow up to be Superman? As the song goes, "It Ain't Necessarily So."

I tend to completely ignore the Nikons on "CSI," or the Fords on the old "FBI" series, or any other product specifically displayed in any show. All the product presence means is that if you have the money, your product can be featured in the show. It says absolutely nothing about the quality of the product.

One could look at the Nikon/CSI link as Nikon is targeting people who are easily swayed by incidental associations, Rather than equipment quality and performance. Canon, by not engaging is such product placement, is targeting people who look past trivialities and give serious consideration to what they will use.

“Stop listening to celebrities. They do what they do for money — that’s all. I don’t even know why you’re listening to me. I’ve done commercials for both Coke and Pepsi. Truth is, I can’t even taste the difference, but Pepsi paid me last, so there it is.”

I like what was said above, both by Dave Chappelle, and by Ssim. BFD.

Bottom line:

If you are going to buy a specific camera brand, because you saw it in a movie/TV Show... Go ahead, you probably belong to the Nikon group anyways. This world needs not any tarded people tarnishing the name of Canon out there.

Most counties cannot afford to have dedicated photographers, so the Crime Scene Investigators (or Evidence Technicians, as we call them in the REAL world), usually carry a lot of equipment, that may include a P&S type camera. I bet if I asked the Sarge that came over to do some training a couple of weeks ago, she'd be unable to remember the brand of that camera. It is a tool for them.

Before you all Canonize Canon, let us not forget that the Rebel series was kicked off with a heavy dose of Andres Agassi, who might have had a ton of pictures of himself in Sports Illustrated, but not many pictures taken by himself. When I decided to move up to the Dslr world, I made my decisions after tons of research on line and in mags. Many of the forum members here are like me, but most of these things are sold not by research but by salesmen and marketing ads. POTN has sold a bunch of 1ds and 5d's but Andres Agassi sold alot more 300d's.

No one said they placed them there or gave the lenses out for free for the publicity. At the time, they were making the best camera/lens combo for sports, and most pros were using them. By making them white, they emphasized their dominance in the marketplace by making them stick out. I know when I was a kid, I always wanted one of those white lenses because that would make my pictures awesome. Plenty of people lusted over those white lenses so they could be just like the pros. Now, whether or not they have the best cameras/lenses for sports, it is already in people's subconscious: You shoot sports, you need the big white lens. Marketing genious.
