...getting home and seeing the dreaded ups sticky on your door saying a signature is needed. WTH!!! So many times they have left stuff from B&H on my porch. It would have really been nice if I knew about this ahead of time. At least I wouldn't have been loking forward to it so bad.
Just needed to vent.

Most purchases from B&H require a signature if it's over a certain amount. I talked to my UPS delivery man and he knows in advance when I will get a package and take it to my work for me to sign (I work around the corner). He can't leave it without a signature, so I worked it out. Next time just call the company and see if a signature is required. Also, the UPS service just changed for my area, so I have to start from scratch. This new guy seems friendly enough, but I miss the old one. :(

A signature is required for all UPS shipments upon receipt
I just found this at B&H's website. This is news to me. It doesn't specify a dollar amount. And I know I have received packages from them without signing. This is the first time. This must be a new policy.
Suzie - you are lucky with that deal. I cannot do that because I work 1/2 hour away and it's in a different state.

Bummer for sure! I am close to the main depot, so I have actually gone there when I missed something important to me.

Remind me to camp out in front of your house the next time you post "waiting for Brown" :)
Be glad they require a signature. Someone recently posted here they delivered to the wrong house with no sig. Bad news.

UPS told me that if I left a note saying that I'll allow UPS to leave it, and I put my signature on it, they can keep that slip as a form of signature. Then, they'll just leave it by the side door. That's what the UPS Store owner, and two UPS drivers told me, anyway.

Now, that would be a bummer.
Yes, I have heard what Ronald posted. If you leave a note with your signature, they will leave it. But really, with equipment worth several hundred or even over $1K, do you really want to leave it by the front door? Wouldn't risk it. Have it sent to your office if you know you will be there.

To me it waiting for a new camera body is worse than waiting for a lens. Usually this means that I have some good glass lying around with nothing to stick it on.

I hate that as well, but I would hate it more if I got home to find that it had been delivered and then stolen. It seems to be a new trend, as they used to always leave things on the front porch. Even a 400 f/2.8 monster lens! But that's changed. Not sure if it's because I moved to a different location or if their overall procedure has changed.

I live in a rural area. I am the last house on the street, and UPS/FedEx/USPS will drop packages off when nobody is home - even if it requires a signature....
A blessing and a curse!

Yeah, I don't live in a big city or "dangerous" area. I've left even $2k-3k packages by the side door. To those passing by, it's just a brown box.
Also, if I have it sent to my house, (they usually go to my brother's in PA to save one tax) then I definitely don't mind having it sit on my porch, which is only 20' from the sidewalk. My home is a business, and people go in and out all day. No one would dare risk getting an empty brown box...too many people around.

I am in a very rural area. Plus, my house is down a long driveway and it cannot be seen from the road. Very few people even drive on my road and nobody ever goes down my driveway. I am completely confident that nothing will get stolen. But, I do understand why B&H has to do this. Still, when all of my other packages have been delivered without me being home, I get annoyed when all of a sudden, the rules change. The slip said that I have to be home in person to sign. I hardly ever see my neighbors and I can't even see their houses from mine. I doubt they would be home to accept. So, I will have to make the 45 minute drive to pick of my lens at the ups garage after work tomorrow. No biggie, I have gotten over the initial disappointment. But the gas money...

I always have my stuff delivered to work as I am there 9-5 mon-fri and that is when things get delivered for me. We have a great UPS guy who generally comes between 12:30 and 1:30 for every delivery. I ordered a 70-200 2.8 IS from B&H on Monday evening before 7 PM specifically so it would ship the next morning, I live in northern NJ and 3-5 day UPS for me is next day delivery. I forgot that I would be out of the office with my whole team today for the whole day and got the yellow slip when we got back, but I'm sure my friend will be there tomorrow with my package!!

I'm fortunate to have a retiree across the street from me who is always happy to sign for packages for me. Very handy.

What's worse then waiting for delivery of a new lens...
Waiting for a delivery of a new car. When I purchased my BMW back in 2001, the wait was killing me.

I had my work address added as a second address on my CC and have everything delivered there, even if my wife is going to be home that day.

No wife to deal with; but I ship EVERYTHING to my work. It's SO much easier than dealing with stupid stickies on my door and playing signature/package tag.
Stefan; why not call UPS and ask them to deliver to your workplace tomorrow?

The worst part about UPS leaving a message on the door is the fact that they don't give a "real" time when they'll be back. The last time I recieved one, it said something like:
'time of next drop off: 8am- 9pm'
but then I'm being sarcastic. What I did was call UPS to call the driver so I can meet up with him. I'm very impatient when it comes to getting photo gear!

What's worse that waiting for a lens? Waiting for a camera! I've been tracking my 1dmk2N since Monday, and the scheduled delivery is Friday.
I have everything shipped to my office now to avoid the signature issue. Leaving a note on the door doesn't work.. I've tried. Besides, the UPS guy here constantly mixes up my neighbors.

I would say, once you got the lens, you find a fault with the camera so you never really get to use it :(
or there's a fault with the lens, that would be worse.

I could always ask, but my workplace is completely out of the juristiction of my home ups route. When I used to live in Maryland, the ups hub was in Hunt Valley, Md. Now that I live in PA, it in York, Pa. Since I work in Md, I am sure my PA ups driver isn't going to make the 30 minute drive out of his way to drop it off at my workplace. But in the future, I could make my workplace the shiping address. Or, maybe I will just suck it up and go right to B&H. 3.5 hour drive. Cool store. Crazy sales tax. No hassle.

Can't ship anything to work since I am roaming. What I do is that I call and leave instructions for it to be held at the depot, and *I* will pick it up at my convenience.. works out much better. I drop in after work (open till 8PM) and pick up the gear without worrying it will be swiped or anything. ID must be presented.

Stefan......had the exact thing happen to me last week .
Waiting for my new 30D and stuff. I knew it was coming so I watched out for him. Nature called..I came out not one minute later and there was the sticker. Had to drive 15 miles (at $3.45 a gallon) and wait until the special hour of between 8:00 and 9:00 pm, to pick it up myself. What the hell did I pay shipping charges for?

What's worse, is lens arriving on husbands day off, when I was not home. Then getting home seeing box on the kitchen table and waiting till he is in the other room to grab it and sneek into the walk in closet to open it in private.

Waiting for a printer. It should be here tomorrow.
My UPS guy leaves many packages at my door unsigned for.
Very expensive ones he needs a signature for.
