Looks like technique to me.
You have both good and bad shots from both 70-200 2.8 and the 24-105.
The example from the 100-400 - is that the full pic? (was it cropped?)
Reason I ask is the subject is high in the frame. Looks loke all 45 points would have been required , centre focus point would not have worked in that instance.

I always select the focus point when shooting motorsport and only ever have one or maybe two active at a time. Allowing the camera to use all 45 points means that you have no control over what it will decide to try and focus on. The AF systems are good, but have no idea where the target that you want to focus on is in the frame. For what it's worth, I probably use the centre focus point less than 10% of the time.

were taken by me using a 1D mk I classic. There is next to no cropping on any of them, instead I have selected one or two focus points to move the subject into the position in the frame that I want it, and then tracked it using AI Servo.
Cheers,
Simon.

I'm just trying to point out that the subject is high in the frame. Obviously a focus point that high will need to be available , whether you select it or allow tha camera to select. Clearly centrepoint will only work for a subject that is centre of frame.
