Hello,
Im a proud owner of Canon 17-40mm.
I currently own 30D and this lens goes really well with the camera as my camera had 1.6 crop but sometimes i wish that i can get more reach out of it. I am thinking of purchasing a teleconverter. Would you recommend this? If so, what brand would you buy?
Let me know and thanks for your help in advance,
Don

It will work with a cheap TC, but not the Canon TC as they will not fit. I wouldn't recommend it for image quality issues, but it probably wouldn't be horrible. Your 17-40 f/4 lens would become a 24-56 f/5.6 with a 1.4x TC and a 34-80 f/8 with a 2x TC.

TC's are usually used for telephoto applications. It'll work, but I wouldn't recommend it. Your 30D probably would not autofocus with the 2x on your 17-40.

Well as Big Hands said, it won't fit a canon T/C. But the 17-40 is essentially a wide angle zoom. Perhaps you could purchase another lens that has the reach you need.

It most likely won't fit the Sigma either if the rear of lens protudes.

Thanks for the comments. I am indeed thinking about purchasing 24-105mm and sell my 17-40mm to finance it but I am afraid that I will miss the 17-24mm range. Also, i heard that 17-40mm is sharper than 24-105mm lens, is this true?

What about selling the 17-40mm and buying Sigma 12-24mm and a 24-70mm? But for me I'll keep the 17-40mm and make use of the 50 and 85mm and 70-200mm. You've got them already. Enjoy them. Your lenses are already very good.

Genewch, my 17-40mm lens is used as a walkaround lens. I love taking landscape photos with it. Only problem is the little extra reach that I need sometimes. I guess Im stuck with it.

haha, as soon as i bought the Kenko Pro 300 1.4x i put it on my 70-200. But I then put it on my 17-40mm, focusing was a bit dodgy. But it did work. Looks weird though.

Will, Does your TC work well with 70-200?

Yes very much so, its superb gives me a 156.8mm-448mm F4 L (thats on a 1.6 crop camera.) Auto Focus is slower but still fairly good, fine for cricket with not much movement but it could still be pretty good for motorsport etc.

As a general rule, TC's don't work as well with wide angle lenses. A TC does great on the 70-200 however, although there is a noticeable IQ loss when wide open (to be expected). Of course, the big primes take the TC's the best (so I've heard). Hopefully I'll get a 300 2.8 this summer to try it on.

Wouldnt it be f/5.6 L since its a stop slower isnt it?
