Anyone use LR on a laptop?
I currently use LR on my main PC (P4 3.0GHz, 2GB Ram, 2x 250GB HDD, 19" LCD) but want to be able to do most of my sorting etc on a laptop hung onto my wireless network. I won't be doing major PP work on it (will save that for the PC) and want something convenient and portable too so was looking at the following:
Samsung Q35
12.1 WXGA display
100GB HDD
1GB RAM
Intel Core Duo T5200 1.6GHz
1.89kg
6hr batt life
EDIT: Vista Home Premium (does LR work on this OK?)
Anyone any advice on whether LR would run well on that?
I hope to be able to put my LR Library on a shared drive on the network and work from either Main PC or laptop as approriate...

Seeing as it is dual core and has plenty of RAM it will support it just fine, even if Vista isn't supported yet it will be a matter of months or even weeks before it will be!

It will still be slow over a wireless network but it should work fine as long as you keep the database in one spot and have both computers access it from that location. However, do NOT open LR on both PCs at the same time. There is also some mention of the 1.1 update helping with LR on multiple computers so keep your eyes and ears open for that news.

Thanks both.
HAve to see what works best, working from a shared Lib on wireless server or copying Lib to laptop then backloading amended Lib to main PC.

The update should fix this issue so for now I would copy the Lib from PC to PC. You could use a sync program each night to update.

I had LR on my Vista laptop. Get another 1GIG of RAM and it will be smoooooooooth otherwise you might get some stalling due to hungry Vista.

I have a 12" Toshiba Tablet PC pimped to the max with 160gb hd, 2gb ram, 1.8Ghz Centrino and I think that LR runs mediocre at best. I even have about 40gb of free space on my hd... I got LR for free because I bought Raw Shooter Premium. With LR I hoped for a one program RAW processing tool, but I find myself still using RAW shooter and Photoshop. Much more convenient IMHO...

olz,
Is that a standard Centrino or a Core Duo?

Just a standard, but as I understand the Core Duo is not that much stronger, but just better at multitasking...

centrino isn't a CPU, it's a platform. You're probably running a Pentium M if it isn't dual core.
Not a bad CPU tbh.
Al, keep us posted as to how this pans out if you can?
I'm going to buy a laptop soon primarily so I can use Lightroom on it in the field.

Adam,
This is what I am looking to get...

I would never normally go near Dixons but they have the best price by far.

I'm not familiar with Samsung computers but the specs look fine to me if you just max the ram to 2 gb. It will really make a difference with Lightroom (and photoshop)...

I'm running LR on my Thinkpad T60p - Windows XP, 2 gig RAM, 2 Ghz Core 2 Duo, ATI Mobility Fire GL V5250 256MB video card, 100 gig 7200 RPM HD with plenty of space. It runs well, but I wouldn't say spectacularly.

I don't think any laptops are really spectacular, but they are pretty damn good for their size!
