Does anyone here use the new collapsible softboxes from Alienbee? I'm wondering if there are any quality issues vs the standard ones.

I do not have any of these, but a friend has one that I recently checked out in detail.
I really liked the unit. The setup was very easy compared to a conventional softbox.
The construction is actually quite like an umbrella, so I do not think they are quite as rugged as a conventional softbox.
The only thing I actually did not like about the unit is that when it is folded down, it does not fold down to a package nearly as compact as a conventional softbox (because of the integrated speedring at right angles to the structure rods). So, when folded it is more cumbersome than a conventional folded softbox.
Enjoy! Lon

Well AB's regualr softboxs are not that sturdy as it is, they are prone to ripping, but that i from putting them together and taking them apart several times.
From what Paul says the collapsible ones stand up better. But only time will tell.

I think it's such a pain to take the regular ones apart and put them together again, I just leave mine together. Takes up a lot of space, but space is only an issue when traveling. In which case, the big ol' Caddy trunk holds two large ones side by side with light stands in between.
I'm considering switching to foldable ones. Sounds nice.

Thanks for the input.

I've heard that advice before...just keep them assembled and put them in the trunk or back seat when travelling.
A lot of what I shoot, involves setting up in people's living rooms...so ease of set up, packing size and durability (& of course, cost) are factors. I'll hopefully be getting a couple more lights next month...so any more input is welcomed.
