View Full Version : 70-200 f2.8L D30 focus problem?

I've got a D30 that has around 13,000 frames on the clock. The camera seems to work fine for the most part, but for the past few months, I've had trouble focusing toward the infinity end of the scale with the 70-200mm f2.8L. The camera/lens seem to work fine at closer distances, but when I try to focus on something (say a person) near (but not at) infinity, the person is out of focus but everything behind the subject is sharp. This happens all the time - at sports events, at graduations, at breaking news events... I've never been able to adjust the diopter sufficiently on the camera to tell when something's crtically in or our of focus, so that's no help. So there I am, shooting happily away in either single AF or servo, and none of the people on the other side of the soccer field or baseball diamond or gymnasium are in focus. They look fine in the viewfinder. They're in focus when I use a different lens. This is getting really frustrating - I'd hate to have to sell the lens off and get something like a Sigma. I think the lens works fine on my film bodies, but I don't shoot film enough (and certainly not at sporting events anymore) to know if those show the same problem. Has anyone experienced anything like this? Is there something wrong with the lens? Or is it just the lens/D30 combo?

I got D30 and 70-200 f/2.8 and their focus pretty much OK in condition you mentioned even if object is too small and moving like small bird in the sky.

Have a look at this thread On DP Review. It sounds very similar to your problem.
