Hi,
I posted a few questions last week about some kit I should buy as I am brand new to SLR photography.
I've just bought an EOS 400D with 18-55mm lens kit, I bought seperately a sigma 70-300 APO Macro doodah lens and a Canon EF28-135 F3.5-5.6IS USM Lens also a Battery Grip, 3 spare batteries, Tripod, Remote control, rucksack, Bryan Peterson book "Understanding Exposure" and asked what flash to buy.....................the resounding reply was a Speedlite 580EX which I promptly purchased.
ALL Brilliant advice and thank you BUT.........................the built in flash seems to give better results than the Speedlite...................HELP???????
Thank you.
John.

That is probably because you are not using it correctly. The 580EX will ALWAYS give better results than the built in.

An external Flash is just like all the other pieces of equipment. It has a learining curve before you can use it and get results that you are satisfied with.
Try reading through this posting for some tips on how to better use your flash.

It will outperform your onboard flash if used proberly.
good luck

I know the manual for the 580 is about the size of a large dictionary, but read it, see how it syncs with the camera, learn about light bounce, exposure compensation, etc. I rarely use my 580 with the flash forward. I usually bounce with the white card at a 45 degree angle up. I used the flash on my 5D last night and it was miserable for lighting. With the card up, it was a lot better.

Not really so. At least the built in flash is always pointed at the subject....

One more example that nothing is foolproof - as we can *always* find bigger fools!
Along that line though - I'm sure I could manipulate my 580 to be worse than the built in. Something simple like setting the 580 to overexpose by a couple stops might do the trick is the built-in were set to flat exposure...
