This lens has an L feel and meets whatever expectation I had with regard to weight and build. The 17-40 still feels kinda light. Over the next couple of days I will be comparing it against the 17-40 and the 50 and 100 primes at respective cross-over points and focal lengths. Should be interesting. Will post anything interesting. Still haven't bit on the 400 5.6, but have been trying to get a lot more use out of my 1.4TC'd 70-300 DO at the long end to see if it'll do a little longer and allow me bypass and jump to the 500.

I'm trying to decide between the 17-40 & 24-105. Any comparison thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks, Gerry

My 24-105 stays on the camera a lot. It's one of my favorites on the 5D. I'm still thinking about getting the 24-70 as well.

I am also deciding whether to get the 24-105, but might get the 17-40 to save up on other toys :)

When I'm driving around town the 24-105 is always on the 30D.

I've got both of them, and use and enjoy both of them for different reasons.

The 24-105 stays on the camera most of the time - it's my main lens for wedding and event work, covering most of the focal length ranges that I use for 90% of that sort of shooting. It is also a great street, walking and hiking lens.

I only just got the 17-40 a couple of months ago as a sort of "semi-backup" to the other in case of failure on a job. I would not use it for portraits or general shooting like the other at a wedding - that focal length is too short for my shooting style - but I've been using it a lot lately for exploring older parts of the city as well as the waterfront, and experimenting with it's ultra wide capabilities.

Take a look at one of my earlier posts from a couple of weeks ago:

This was a shot I did with the 17-40L on a fog/sun day at the waterfront. From where I was, I could not get this sort of composition with the 24-105. Now if you go to this link, you can see a series of shots I did with the 24-105:

I like that lens so much, I'm thinking of getting a 5D to mount it on.

Well, I've begun to dabble with lens comparisons. I have some prep work to do to things before I can post some pictures, but am pleased to see some of the differences that I expected. Again some pictures will follow. I compared my 10-20 Sigma on the 20D with the 17-40 on the 5D, both tripod mounted and at f/4 and f/8. The Sigma at 10 was noticeably softer at f/4 than the L at 17. At f/8 the Sigma matched the 17 at f/4 and the 17 at f/8 was sharper still. Lots more focal lengths to evaluate, but so far very cool.

That's one of those quality lenses that will stay with you if you upgrade bodies at some point in the future.

Congrats! You'll love that lens! I love my 24-105L. 90% of my shots from my Hawaii honeymoon were taken with it, and it's just insanely nice! Hands down the best walk around lens I've ever had. (just wished it was completely sealed like the white L's)

I have both and in low light there is no comparison...24-70L rules! Also have 24-105L on my 5D 90% of the time!

true - in low light I switch to my 50 f/1.4, although higher iso on the 30D is still pretty good as it wasn't nearly as noisy as my 300D back in the day.
