It's a slight crop - but not significant.
It was an interesting day. My car broke, so I spent the day taking photos instead. It was a low-key trackday, and with a fluoro bib and the permission of the marshalls, I was able to go where I wanted. That pic was taken roughly 6-feet from the apex of the corner - no barriers, no restrictions (other than common-sense). I knew all of the drivers too - which helped.
Would like to have got closer, but was being 'sensible'...

My shot was a "lucky" one, the other 146 out of focus, blurred and mis-composed shots are in the bin...... is it the same for everyone else ?

I have a couple of misses but mostly because the ****ty fitty (50mm f/1.8 II) isn't such a hot lens, especially on the XT. I was fiddling a bit with my settings though, so only one more at 1/30th from that night. Got a 1/40th, a couple 1/60ths, and some 1/80ths though.
The other 1/30th:

Welcome to the club, this is a good place to learn, just post questions in the right categories and u will get good advice.
Cdi, if u hadn't told us u were using a 50 1.8, I wouldn't have believed you, that makes it all the more impressive:cool:

Thanks Myles7 & Croasdail,
I like the shot a lot with the slower shutter speed effect of the front of the car in focus and the motion blur of the rest of the car.

Mountain Bike scrambling poise a problem in panning due to the rough and uneven terrain and track. However the colour and lines create an interesting background to the subject.

I'm afraid it was - the light was poor, it was raining, and I was cold, so I started to fiddle

Thanks for the compliments guys. Yeah RC shooting is kinda hard. But still very doable. Yeaj, it's best to sit down while shooting these cars. Or even better, lay down on your front :)
The main reasons shooting RC is harder in my opinion is:
1. cars are small and speed is very fast
2. RC cars are driven in a "jerky" style many times. Not as smooth as full scale cars.
Some people prefer off-road rc shooting because it is easier to get a sense of motion there (dirt flying around, jumps, etc)
anyhow, here's some of my other radio control panning shots

Okay...So it is not a car...but it is fast. So fast I had to capture it at 1/100 Sec., F8.0, ISO 100, and at 150.0 mm with my 70-200 L IS 2.8 mounted to my 20D.

Here is one of mine from this years TT. Bottom of Bray Hill, the bikes are up to 150+mph, not much room to pan as the run down the hill is obscured by hedges.

There are indeed two blokes on that, it's called a Sidecar Outfit. The rider kneels in front of the engine, the passenger moves around on the platform behind to transfer his or her weight, aiding cornering. The outfits are 3-wheeled. And fairly insane.
I was thinking the same a few pages back about non panned shots too...
