ive been thinking long and hard about having my own website with my own domain name and web space.

i purchased my domain name through 123reg and purchased a months web space on godaddy. i thought i could design my own website but really have no clue on what to do lol.
any suggestions or tips on how to go about this please. possibly links to newbie web designer tutorials.
im sick of using places like zenfolio, pbase and all the other hosts out there. thing is im not really looking at anything to fancy.

ive started doing wedding photography so all im really wanting is an about me page, contact page and a portfolio page really to start off with

thanks

Check out Coffee Cup software. They have some very user friendly (and cheap) programs that might help you.
http://www.coffeecup.com/software/

If that doesn't work, I would try to help.

thanks. i tried to upload a basic html file to my website but nothing comes up when i type my address in the address bar.
when i type the address all that comes up is
http://194.154.164.90/?domain=perfectexpressions.co.uk

i know its something to do with dns records not pointing to godaddy.com's servers or something but im lost here. i do feel rather stupid here

You need to add the nameserver address/es from your host into the 123 control panel so the domain knows where to go to. For example, my nameservers are NS1.buzzdns.com and NS2.buzzdns.com ... and I am sure 123 with have a FAQ with the right info for you to do that. Consider too that it can take a day or two for the domain to propagate, i.e. for the connection from domain to web space to be made across the Internet.

Check that you own the domain as well, especially if you will use for mbusiness. I never recommend these cheap domain registrars because they are cheap for a reason often: they own the domain or charge over the odds for additional services that, if you buy a decent hosting package, are included. However, 123 may be decent ... you'd need to read their terms and charges. I use 000domains for .com, etc or Donhost/Joker for .Uk domains and they have never let me down or caused hassle. They also provide excellent support whenever needed.

perfectexpressions.co.uk Thats what you should type to view the page. Did you mean you were trying to get to the control panel to upload info? Maybe post some screen shots?

For learning web development, http://www.w3schools.com has some good guides, but it's not exactly a quick process...

Dont worry if you can not design a great website. You always have the option to buy a template and modify to your needs. If you want to buy a template just search on google. you will find many.

Recently I bought one. here is the link to that. www.supranavdash.com/test

You still need to want to learn at least basic HTML or Flash to use a template, or to learn the basics of Dreamweaver, GoLive, or whatever. For some it is enjoyable and for others not worth it (most free templates suck anyway!) If you didn't even know where your bonnet latch is would you still try and repair your car engine? You can access well priced web developers world-wide via Elance.com ... I have used several for different projects. A simple site shouldn't be more than £300 using a development company in India. The key is to know what you want.

Good luck learning Dreamweaver... I just took a class for it and still dont really understand it all.It is the most unituitive program i've ever used.If you can afford it
Fluid Galleries by Evrium (http://www.evrirum.com) is relly nice.Thats what I plan on using when I replace my current site after I finish my portfolio.

I used a program called NVU, that I downloaded for free from www.nvu.com (http://www.nvu.com)
Its similar to frontpage but much more basic (better for us beginners :)).

You can get templates around, that you can modify so they reflect your style, or if you want to create everything from scratch try http://www.thesitewizard.com/gettingstarted/nvu1.shtml its the site I used to get the idea of what I needed to do.

Hope it helps :D

I know this thread is old, but I'll pipe in to say that I started using nvu last month and it's pretty good. I don;t have Dreamweaver experience so I can't compare directly, but it did the job for me and the price was right.
