I am on the verge of getting my business started, and I am looking to get a good dslr. The EOS 10D is what I have always thought I was going to get, but we are pulling them from our shelves at the electonics store in which I work. We sell the Rebel now. I am surprised they are taking so long with the nice affordable 8 mp d70 (nikon) on the market for a lil bit now. I would like to stay in the Canon family, but have an 8 mp, and the digic II chip.......any rumors...lmk

The D70 is 6 Megapixels.
I'm willing to bet that most retailers are replacing the 10D with the Rebel because they can sell more units of the Digital Rebel because of availability vs the 10d.

If you want to wait untill the next model comes out then definitely wait until photokina in sept/oct.
If there is another model coming out anytime soon they will definitely announce it there

My guess is a "20D" in the fall with plenty of the Mark II's features, especially the E-TTL 2. It will have a larger buffer than the 10D, and a better AF, as it needs a better AF in order to use E-TTL 2. I think that it'll be an 8 MP camera, but with the small CMOS (1.6) rather than the 1.3 of the Mark II.
The 1Ds is in need of an upgrade too since it's the oldest Canon Dslr right now. Even the dRebel has a few features that the 1Ds lacks like auto rotating of thumbnails. If it does come as an upgrade, call it a D1sn - then that could come at almost any minute, and they may not wait for Photokina.
If it's a model change then would 16 MP be out of the question? Although the 1Ds and the Mark II are better cameras, that new Kodak 14MP camera is going to steal some sales from Canon, so maybe Canon will be looking to get the high ground of largest DSLR MP count back.
I wonder if Canon will finally introduce some auto cleaning feature for the CMOS. It'd be nice.
Guessing's fun and that's all this is. Let the bull**** continue!

The 10D has been "rumored" as discontinued at least once a month now since last November :) There have been a lot of posts about this on all the forums I check..
Canon is VERY tight lipped on their development. They do a good job of keeping camera models secret up until shortly before 'the big rollout'. Any leaks about what Canon is developing is guaranteed to be plastered all over the online photo forums.. It's something you definitely won't have to ask about :)
The 10D is pretty long in the tooth (over a year now). That's a very long time compared to the D30 and D60. I'm sure it's due for replacement.. As Ron Chappel states.. Photokina in the fall is traditionally where camera manufacturers roll out their new equpment.. That's most likely when we'll see the 10D Mk II.. (or whatever they call it).

No more rumors. There will be a 10D successor in JUNE 2004.
Features:
8,2MP
3 fps
enhanced AF
DIGIC II
E-TTL II
around 2000.-€
I stopped my order for the 1DMKII - and placed another one for the new machine. Hopfully the delivery will start end of June 04. I do not need the 8,5 fps - this saves me a lot of money for "L"-glas and other nice things to have. :D :D :D

Dieter, are you sure about this ?
I sold my 300D and I plan to buy a 10D this week or the next one.
So have I to wait until the new one arrive ?
This new machine will be 1,6 crop or 1,3 crop ?
From wich source you got this info ? (if you can say it )

Got it from my dealer! can not name him - sorry.
But I canceled my order for the 1D MK II and he took my preorder!
Crop is estimated 1,3 (the same sensor like in the 1Ds MKII)
I would wait another fortnight.

Locally I've learned from a major Canon guru that in the fall Canon will release a DSLR to replace the 10D it should have some of the upgraded features from the MarkII without the $4500.00 price tag. Price range midway of the 10D & Mark II. In fact he diverted me from purchasing an Mamiya Pro TL & save the $$ for the upcoming unit.
During the PMA I spoke with an Canon rep & asked him if the 10d will be outdated this year I he said as long as I'm happy with the cam it will be up to date so he diverted the question of course I sure he will not put his job on the line for anyone.
This is just what I've heard, I'm sure there is & will be plenty of speculation going around until the next big show. Me myself is not going to purchase anything else but L glass until the fall 2004 or next PMA in 2005. The 10D has and continues to serve my purpose very well & as much as I like the Mark II it's out of my price range.

The D80 rumor predates the 10D (think about it, D30, then D60, then the next model will be a D80, right? Wrong...)
That picture has been floating around for a very long time.

i'm the one who posted the D80 rumour in 'the other thread' as a joke. if you remember the last time we had rumours, when the D60 was king (of its class i mean), that the D80 was going to be a major enhancement. then the 10D snuck out without a lot of fanfare.
although its a much better machine, many people were disappointed because the 10D wasn't over the D60 like the D60 was over the D30.
so... that said i'm sure it's going to be a decent improvement, but i don't know if i'd cancel my 1D mkii order yet. wait... i don't have it on order as there are lots of them to be had here (at around US $5100   )

While I was anticipating the upgrade to the 10D to be in Fall, I have heard some evidence of a June/july release for a new Canon Camera so I can believe a Late June release date.
Whenever it is, I suspect it most likely expect it to be a 1DM2 in a 10D body with a 3 FPS and 8-9 frame buffer at around $2500 US.
I was guessing on a 1Ds upgrade in the fall, but since Canon is approaching the optimal sensor limit, and given that they did not release an expected upgrade to the XL-1S video when expected, it is quite possible there will be no sensor upgrade to the 1Ds, If there is an upgrade, I will guess it will be FPS and buffer upgrade with some secondary enhancements. There is no real reason at this time to go for a higher MP sensor as noise reduction algorithms still need a bit of work to get a reduced pixel size while keeping the same noise levels of the 1Ds. It is off course possible they may go for a 14-16MP sensor, but I suspect that is unlikely at this time.
Eventually both the 1D and 10D paths will take them to a 16-22MP FF sensor, the FPS, buffer and secondary features will mark the differences.
I suspect though that Canon will continue producing the current 1Ds sensors, but they will eventually migrate into the 10D follow-ons.
Thus my predictions of the future as they stand now.

June/July would be in accordance with a marketing attack back at Nikon. I hope they do, and I am hoping for 8mp...then I will be set

Man, if they were to come up with an 8 mpx/1.3 frame for around $2000-2500, I'd have to take a very close look at it. Especially if it had the improved focus scheme of the 7N and E-TTL II.

they would also (hopefully....) take into account whatever features are likely to be in the ni*on's d100's replacement - also likely to be announced at photokina (including demarkation features to position it above the 'amateur' d70 and into the semi-pro marketing bucket). the same 'rumours' have been floating around 'the other guy's boards'.
fwiw -i heard the 20D is using some alien technology/wifi hybrid which automatically flushes the buffer to your pc or laptop (wirelessly, within 135 km) at roughly 4 fps - with bursts limited only by your hard drive controller. it has *no* cf slot, only sd (it comes with a 16meg one). but this is only used for chimping  . gone is the magnesium case - replaced with carbon fibre (with cool titanium highlites 8) ). although they are able to now produce it for less than $12.50 in their artesian assembly facility, they have to price it well above the 300d (and no one would buy it unless it cost at least $1800)[/b]

Hi,
I´m not talking about this D80, 80D or whatever is on this particular page.
There will be a 10D replacement in the End of June. I have placed a preorder at my dealer. The official announcement shall be in the first days of June.
This camera will be based on the same chip like the MKII. And there will be some more improvments versus the actual 10D. And what I found out it´s more a downsized 1D MKII than an upgraded 10D.
I keep you on track as soon as I have more details.

Dieter, did your dealer tell you how much the new camera will cost ?
I'm gonna pay 1.500€ for a 10D. If the price is similar I would wait for the new one to come. If the price is in the region of 2000 - 2500€ i wouldn't wait because I can not afford it.

Either you are joking or your dealer is pulling your leg.... what are you going to pay for that new camera? what are the specifications? what is its name? surely you didn't order a camera without knowing the answer to those questions yourself? why can't you say who your dealer is?

I stopped by my local camera shop today after work to try and get some "inside info". I told him I was ready to buy that 10D on the shelf but with my luck Canon would replace it right after I got home. His reply: "I would wait a month or so."
He went on to say that the canon rep had not given them any specifics but that the 10D was on the way out, soon. And he should have the replacement by the end of June. He was not taking pre-orders, but he will call when he has more details.
I think I will wait and see

exactly that is what I heard from my dealer and some additional inside informations like:
8MP, 3fps, ETTL-II, improved AF, between 2000.- and 2500.-€.
This is it. And I am the first on his list - so if the whole spec is there and the name and... there is no problem on making a different decission :P

hmmm, being more of a "dumbed down" 1D MKII than an improved 10D... I can already see the petitions being drafted begging Canon for a firmware hack to get 8fps! I better get my typing skills in shape.

Actually, this is what I'm hoping for in the next 10D replacement. I would like to get another camera body later this year and it'll probably be the 10D replacement. However, if the FPS rate isn't improved much over what the 10D does now, I will seriously have to consider the 1DmkII as well and then agonize over several weeks trying to decide which one to go with.
