ok, ive read through lots of threads on this site, bag reviews on amazon, main sites, etc. I have not found a clear answer, and I'm starting to think this may be something that doesn't exist...
I am planning a trip to Amsterdam later this year, and would like to bring my 30d, 2 lenses, and a 17" laptop. I've seen plenty of backpacks for laptops, and backpacks for cameras, but none that seem to accommodate both.
The reason I need a backpack (or anything really) that can carry both, is because the EU has a new restriction on carry-ons as of April of this year (2007), which states the largest carry-on can only be 22x18x10 inches.
Obviously, I don't want to leave my camera, or my laptop in the hands of checked baggage. If anyone has a suggestion, please let me know, otherwise I'm considering just leaving the laptop home, or getting a smaller one just for travel. Which would certainly postpone some lens purchases. :(

The Crumpler Brazillion Dollar Home will do it with room to spare. I have taken mine on two trips lately. I struggled slightly with the overhead compartment on one plane, but I was in First Class and the first Overhead opening is slightly smaller in this plane. Otherwise it's been great for this purpose (30D, 24-105, 50, 28-75, laptop, ipod, headphones, etc)

hmm, i came across this video of the Brazilian Dollar Home, and when the guy pulls out a 15 inch powerbook, it looks like even that barely fits..

plus i dont have a powerbook, my laptop is slightly larger, which makes me cautious..

I have a 17 inch Gateway that fits like a charm.

nice. how does it work as a backpack? I see it says it has shoulder straps (although they are described as "last resort" on crumpler.com, ha!)
I also saw the Lowepro CompuDayPack says it fits a 17" laptop, plus has room for dslr, 3 lenses, plus an area for books, lunch, etc.
and ill add its around $200 less... although it came out a year ago at the same price as the brazilian.

I played with the Tamrac Adventure 9 last night. It'll fit your camera, has a dedicated laptop compartment and room for a sweater or two. I've seen it online for around $120 shipped. Thinking about picking one up for myself.

Honestly, I've never tried the shoulder straps, so I can't answer the question. Sorry.

I have the Lowepro CompuRover that I just took overseas as hand luggage with no dramas.
It fits my 15" widescreen DELL with room to spare.

I've got the Lowepro Computekker AW. It comfortably fits all my gear (SLR, lenses, cleaning stuff, memory cards, everything) Plus my 15" laptop. My only problem is that one of the exterior zippers gave out after only a few weeks.

Shouldn't the zipper be fixed under warranty???

im pretty sure ill have to find one locally so i can make sure my laptop fits - unfortunately, circuit city has a great deal on the compudaypacks, but appear to be sold out in all stores within 50 miles...
i may just test out adorama/amazon return policies...

I've had the Tamrac Adventure 9 now for a few months and I love it. It fits my laptop, as well as my 20D and all of the lenses that I care to travel with, which is the 10-22 EF-S, the 24-70 2.8L, the 75-300 3.5-5.6, and the 200 2.8L, with room to spare (for the G7, batteries, lenspens, memory cards, etc). And that's not even using the upper storage compartment of the backpack which will fit an Ipod or other MP3 player and a good paperback book, and maybe a light snack.
Having used all kinds of different backpacks in the past (from Eastpack to Jansport to everyone in between back in my school days or when I travel light), I'd say that the padded Tamrac shoulder supports are the best that I have ever experienced.

i may be overlooking something, but I don't see any caselogic bags that accommodate a 17" screen. looks like they max out at 15.4"

Get the Lowepro Compu Rower AW (http://taschenfreak.de/TASCHEN/LP/CompuRoverAW/index.htm). For a 17" laptop plus acessories you shoulder will kill you for buying a slingbag.
