I just bought one of these babies. You can lift your jaw of the floor cause I'm just kidding - at US$110,000 I don't think I will ever be able to consider even considering buying it.
I was just wondering if anyone has had a brush with this lens or if anyone knows of any sample photos taken with it?
I can just imagine dropping it and having a massive heart attack at 20..

Pretty sure they haven't made a 1600mm, but they can make you a 1200mm on special order.
There won't be many people who have seen one as I understand the total count is still below 100 units made.
Cheers

Do you mean this one (http://www.canon.com/camera-museum/camera/lens/ef/data/ef_1200_56l_usm.html), the EF 1200mm f/5.6 L USM ? The original price was 9,800,000 yen (how much is that?) and it weighs 16.5 kg !!

Well lets see here...these are int'l extortion rates:
9,800,000.00 JPY = 85,698.38 USD (Yes, $85,700 approx!!!!)
1 JPY = 0.00874473 USD 1 USD = 114.355 JPY
Really... $94,270 (10%) to $89985 (5%)
In Euros...
9,800,000.00 JPY
Japan Yen = 71,349.42 EUR (Yes, E71,350 approx!!!)
1 JPY = 0.00728055 EUR 1 EUR = 137.352 JPY
E74,916 (5%) to E78,489 (10%)
To get a more accurate estimate add about 5-10% more...banks have to make their cut too. I have done this below the rest of the conversion with 5% and 10% markup buying $/Euros

You don't need a tripod ring with this lens.. it weighs so much.. the Earth rotates around it....

I thought that it came with a tripod... ? I've also heard that they've only made 8 so far.
I wonder if they'll do layaway?

Most of us ordinary mortals don't have much serious use for a 1200mm lens.
However, just a couple of weeks ago, when I was at a zoo, I had some great subjects way out there (lemurs, actually).
I had my Sigma monster wildlife lens, 170-500mm, then I had a x1.4 teleconverter on, and then if you figure the x1.6 factor of the camera body, I was effectively getting a shot with over 1000mm of lens. I guess we can get that long reach after all.

I did try my 500 F4L IS with stacked x2 and x1.4 TC's to give 1,400mm. Even on my full Wimberley and heaviest tripod you couldn't get it stable enough to take a shot without blur from vibration. The 1,200 is a much heavier build so any passing ant does not ruin that critical shot.
What I want to see is a photographer using a 1200 on a monopod and then slinging it over his shoulder to carry it. I can assure you he would have my unreserved respect.

It IS 1680mm with the 1.4X TC ... and at f/8 it will still AF on a "1" body!

Don't worry - the 1200D Close-Up Lens is only $22,300. It will do 56:1, but it's a little fuzzy at the edges.

And the focus distance is limiting.. you can't be more than 1/8th of an inch away!

I'm afraid the lens in the image is not the 12-1200/2.8. Judging by the image, the front element is likely not to be over 155 mm in diameter, so the lens can't be faster than f/7.75 or f/8. :-(

have you checked
http://www.usa.canon.com/eflenses/lens101/focallength/index.html
the focal length comparisson page on canon's website ?
the last one used is the 1200mm lens.
Not very high quality image, but it should give you an idea how far it "sees"
