What lens you think it is best? 1st combination or second lens?
Canon 70-200mm f2,8 + 2x extender
or
Canon 100-5400 f4,5 - 4,6
(both L lens)

I would go for the 2.8/ 70-200 L USM. The two more stops if used alone are great. The extender is good thing to have in your bag. If you can afford it take the "IS" - this is much more fun without a tripod.
I can tell :D

The 100-400mm will yeild MUCH better results than the 70-200mm with a 2X teleconverter...
If your intention is to shoot at 400mm.. then get the 100-400mm.
If however. you need the 200mm f/2.8.. and will only be shooting with the 2X occasionally... then you MAY want to go for the 70-200m...
But again.. as a side by side comparison.. the 100-400mm Vs. the 70-200mm and 2X.. the 100-400 wins hands down.

I got the 70-200 and then the 100-400. The 70-200 hasn't been on the camera since I got the 100-400. :(
Kind of a shame. It's a very sweet lens. But the 100-400 is just. too. damn. handy. And I agree with CDS - the 100-400 easily beats the 70-200 + 2x TC. But that doesn't really consider the 70-200 alone - f/2.8 is a very nice thing.
So what are you going to shoot? If you do a lot of deer shots in the early morning followed by geese in the afternoon then the f/2.8 will be necessary and the 400mm might not be.

Oh, sure. You won't believe CDS and I, but you'll believe some guy on some other site.
:-)
I forgot about that link. That is a good test.
The other killer is the IS on the 100-400 - IS is *very* nice to have.

As is quickly becoming typical with LL tests and reviews.. this one leaves a lot to be desired...
He renders the test almost useless by admitting that the crops come from the corners of the images??
We ALL know that a lens performs at it's best towards the center! Especially on a Digital SLR where the directional light vignette effect has the least influence.
So we really have useless sample images here... with no Idea from them about the actual sharpness of the images in te center?
Sheesh :?
