Would this work with a D30, I've searched the threads and can't find any more info.
If you can send me a link it would be appreciated or a straigt answer would be good too.
Thanks

No.
EF-S lens will not fit into a D30, D60, or 10D.
To the best of my knowledge, it will only fit onto the Digital Rebel (300D).

I wanted a wide angle lens for my 10D, but didn't want to spend much on it. The Canon EF-S 18-55 only works on the 300D. I bought a Sigma 18-50DC which is very well priced, not as good as lenses that cost about 7 times as much like the Canon 17-40L but not as dear either.

I saw on fred maranias forums, that someone took the 18-55ef s lens and made it into a 18-55ef lens. Of course it took a few modifications to do this.
Sorry don't have the link at this time.

I called Canon support and the tech said their bulletins that it will damage the camera, of course I took that with a grain of salt.
Thanks Again.

it won't fit - it's the mount - try the tamron 19-35 - about $200

There's a small lip on the back of the 18-55 lens that would interfere with the mirror on any other EOS body---10D for example. Conversely, standard EF lenses will all fit the Rebel.
Some people have actually machined the lip off the lens and used it on a body other than the Rebel----one guy from Korea looked like he'd done it with a chainsaw. No matter, it apparently worked.

Yes, there's some risk for doing so...

Why would anyone want to spend the time to do so? The 18-55 EFS is a nice little kit lens, and great to sell with your DRebel body at trade-up, but it sure is not a lens that I would seek after, much less make modifications to to fit onto another camera, with unknown consequences. At the end of the day, you will have a hacked-up kit lens and hopefully not a damaged camera body costing 15 times the price of the lens.

This is a gearhead/geek forum. There are plenty of people who would do this, if for nothing else than bragging rights. Also the modification works and you can have a very cheap 18mm lens that you can use on you 10D. Vignette's like a pig, but still usable.

To me it sounds like bragging that you were able to put a Volkswagen engine in your Porsche...not much to brag about. Now, the reverse might garner some bragging rights. :D

I wouldn't buy from a vendor that would sell you an EF-S 18-55mm lens. It isn't available from Canon separately from a 300D kit. That would mean the vendor was getting 300D kits with EF-S lenses from Canon, separating the lens from the kit, selling the Canon body-only, and then making a profit selling the lens.
Stinks like 47th St. photo, to me (or take your pick of any number of sleazy mail-order operations).

Well, you would be surprised at how many people have a lot of free time. I've seen this in other communities, such as computer enthusiasts, where they will spend 100s of hours modifying their computer and tweaking it (overclocking, watercooling, etc.) to get more performance, which can usually be achieved cleaner and cheaper just by buying an upgraded computer.
Yes, your analogy to putting a VW engine in a Porsche is correct, but people do it. I know of people in India who buy dead shells of Mercedes, BMW, and Porsche and retrofit domestic made, carburator engines and sell those cars to young turks to show off as status symbols. So you would literally have a Porsche with a VW engine, if that. :D
Gearhead/Geeks don't follow regular logic....you know that.

My Porsche engine in the VW analogy. They will not spend much time tweaking their PC to REDUCE the performance.

Different logic involved with having not, or not being able to afford the real product. If they already have the 10D, this argument would not apply.

Sure, but they do what they do to INCREASE performance, not REDUCE. That's my point with the EF-S lens on someones existing 10D. If you found a 10D without a lens and also found/had the 18-55 EF-S lens and wanted a functioning camera, but couldn't afford anything else, your India "because of need" example would apply, but I doubt that this is the case we are discussing. :D

I actually did the hack myself to use on my 10D. I bought the 18-55 on Ebay for about $105. It works great.
I already have a Canon 28-135 and Sigma 50-500, but I wanted something a bit wider and I couldn't justify spending a ton of money on the 17-40.

They agreed to replace it with a new Sigma 18-50mm DC, free shipping and a set of filters for the hassle. So instead of getting pi$$ed, I think I made out at least by $50 in free stuff.
I agree with the hacking, athough it would work, why worry yourself that it may damage that 1000 dollar camera everytime you take a photo.
cheers,
02cents.
