View Full Version : How good is the 1D?

Can someone help me with this problem :

Currently I still use wet film and scan images at 2820dpi with Scan Dual II resulting in a full frame of 3990 x 2660 = + 10k pixels. This is sufficient for magazines to use since their requirement is 3000 pixels horizontally. This means I can roughly crop 1/4 of a full frame and still meet their requirements.

I would be interested to switch to digital, but financially the 1Ds and 1D MkII are out of my league. On the other hand the next cameras don't seem to meet the above-mentioned minima :
D30 : 2160 x 1440
D60 : 3088 x 2055
10D : 3088 x 2055 (~ 300D)
1D : 2496 x 1662

Recently however, I heard that digital pixels should not be compared with (read : are better than) the pixels I retrieve from slide scans. Does this mean the high res images of a 1D can be used up to A3 format prints with still sufficient quality for the magazines? The limited number of pixels does not give me much room for cropping I suppose? Does anybody have any experience as to delivering digital images to magazines?

I would be seriously interested in the 1D (non MkII) because of its :
- 8 fps
- 16 f RAW burst rate
- only 1.3 x
- solid construction
- low noise with high ISO
-...

Any pro's / cons why I should (not) consider the 1D?

Thanks for your advice,

Johan

Anyone???

Let me rephrase the question :

Has anyone submitted 1D shots to magazines and were they satisfied with the quality for at least A4 prints?

Personally no, but since virtually every pro photographer I've seen at motor-racing events for ages has been wielding a 1D I imagine they've had some success. ;)

Thanks, Caldwell.

I was thinking somewhat in the same line : since they're Pro-cameras the resulting image should be up to editorial standards.

Is it true that pixels generated by digital cameras are considerably different from slide scan pixels?

I'm sorry if the questions are a bit 'deja vu' for you all, but I need the push to step into digital one of these

Yes, I have and had them printed in a couple of cases across 2 pages. I also regularly have prints done to A3 and framed.

A lot of what a magazine looks for in a submitted image is a hang over from slide and scan. They want 300dpi - well you just change the tag to 300dpi and they are happy. They want images around 20mb upwards - easy, shoot RAW, convert in C1 with a 130% size and hey-presto a 20mb interpolated file. It shrinks down to a perfect image when they print anyway. I have never had a single image rejected on a technical basis. Simply give them what they ask for.

My view on the 1D - the best hunk of bullet proof digital camera Canon have ever made for the sports/PJ photographer. I'll pass judgement on the MK-II when I get mine.

As the leading aviation publisher in the UK uses Canon 10Ds, you'll find that plenty good enough!

Hi KennyG,

thanks for the advice. I knew that interpolation was a thing to bring the resolution up to their standard, yet I thought too much of it would "show" i.e. detrimental to the picture quality. But if the mags don't complain...

May I conclude from your (and f4aviation's) answer that 1D is a good enough cam for my goal and that the MkII with the +8 Mio pix only gives you the luxury of not needing to interpolate pics? Quite a price difference for this advantage. I couldn't justify this extra cost. Now my mind is even more set on the 1D.

Are there things I should bear in mind when shopping for a second-hand? I've heard of a "banding" problem? Any other such problems?

Thanks for the offer. Although - Shipping to Europe is a pain, or at least our customs duties...

But why do you sell the 1D instead of your 10D?
