I intend to photograph some colleagues at work (indoors) later this week and I’m trying to determine the best way to use my new 550EX with a D60.

It is my understanding that using (for example) Av mode, normal metering (evaluative, partial or center-weighted average) will be applied to whole picture/background and the flash unit will fire so as to give the point of focus a middle grey (Zone V) exposure. I also understand that the flash metering will work whether I use a direct or bounce flash.

Would the following technique work?

1. Disable auto flash reduction (CF 10).
2. Use the Zone system and effectively spot meter at the point of focus. For example, if the point of focus is Caucasian skin, then use a flash compensation of +1ev.

If this will work, how big is the area is metered around the point of focus?

Alternatively, should I just leave everything to the automatic modes?
