There seem to be quite a few forum members in the Northern VA, Southern MD, metro Washington DC area. I noticed that IanD is doing a get-together in Montreal, and am wondering if anyone is interested in having a similar event in this region.
Lots of interesting locations to choose from, including Great Falls (either side), Meadowlark Gardens, the National Arboretum, and of course all those memorials down in The District.
Thoughts?

Too late, Mitch. I was just there 2 weeks ago. Try the new Air & Space annex over at Dulles - it's heaven for airplane lovers! The new WWII Memorial is nice, too.

Hey Scott. You still hanging around here with us lowly Canon shooters?
Thanks for the tip. My dad-in-law is in town and he's a big plane (and train) buff, so a trip to the new Air & Space hangar is a good idea.

Of course! You can't get rid of me THAT easily! :)

One tip: don't be shocked at the $12 fee for parking. It's a ripoff, I know, but that's just how it is. The museum is free. If you can get someone to drop you off at the door, there won't be any charge.

I have been to the new A&S place. Not too shabby.
If there is more talk about this then I can get my friend involved. He doesn't take pictures but is fascinated with planes and has a parkign pass for the museum so it stays 100% free ;)
I love the WWII memorial, been there a few times before it opened and am going again this weekend.

Head North on the interstate and take him to the train museum in Baltimore.

The train museum is a great place, but this may not be the best time to go. The roof of the roundhouse collapsed in the big snowstorm of 2003, and they haven't quite got everything back together yet. :(

I didn't even know there was a train museum! That's good info, and I'll get a repair update before making plans. This will be a definite "to do" item at some point!

It is the B&O Train Museum, and they had quite a collection - unfortunately, some irreplaceable items were damaged or destroyed when the snow built up and caused the collapse. Plus, they were gearing up for an elaborate 'Fair Of The Iron Horse' which had to be postponed (cancelled?). They got the roof repaired just recently, and are trying to get everything back together by November of this year. Check here:

Looks like we are set for July 31st.
So far we have four members from this forum, two from another (Outdoor Eyes), and a handful of "definite maybes" as well.
The overwhelming preference is to start in the early morning down in the Mall area. Please post any thoughts on more specific times and locations here.
Thanks!

Let's nail down the date: Saturday July 31st or Sunday August 1st? Once we have that done we can pick a start time. Please use the poll above to respond.

I've sent PMs to everyone who has expressed an interest; hopefully I didn't miss anyone.
By popular demand (3 votes and 3 PMs) we are changing the date to Sunday August 1st.
There is strong preference for very early morning in downtown DC (monuments, mall area, etc.) I think this is appropriate for the first get-together in this area; future trips can include other locations of course.
I have always had good luck parking near Constitution Gardens, on Constitution Avenue between 17th and 21st. It is about mid-way on the mall, which I find convenient. I am open to car-pooling with anyone coming from (or staying near) the Reston area.
As I can only send one PM at a time, please respond via email to slejhamer @ hotmail dot com (you know how to enter it correctly) and we can further coordinate the time and location.
Please forward this to anyone else who may be interested.
Thanks!
