this is from waaayyyyy back in October, and i'd forgotten about it until the mag i was shooting for got the new issue out, and i saw it. Mojave 3 formed from the ashes of shoegazer outfit Slowdive, but eschewed the gauzy, hazy guitar clouds for a more breezy, almost western feel. unfortunately the lovely rachel goswell was battling inner ear problems (wear yr earplugs!) and couldn't make it, but the band soldiered on.

#1 band leader Neil Halstead

Narlus, as soon as i saw the name Mojave 3 i knew it had to be a thread by you. You continually have great bands to shoot. I think i need to move to Boston.

I love 1,4,and 6. 6 is my favorite of this series.

Keep up the good work, always look forward to your posts.

thanks moe! glad to hear you appreciate the same sort of music. you may want to pick up a copy of the just issued Big Takeover (Shins on the cover), which has a bunch of stuff i shot, and as always great interviews and reviews from editor/publisher Jack Rabid and his staff. i also wrote the live review of this M3 gig; despite the absence of Rachel, it was a good show.

I think I like #2 and 6 best. #1 looks a bit OoF (cheek instead of eye). Otherwise nice as well.
I think I'd have cropped #4 coloser and/or landscape.

Nice set.

i can't trust my contact lens-corrected vision to confirm autofocus accuracy, so the next best thing is to stop down a bit more. ;)

I think I'd have cropped #4 coloser and/or landscape.

these were done in my nascent PP days (not to say i do all that much more now), and i was fairly willynilly w/ the crop ratio.

thanks for the comments all.

I like the... band shot #3.. and also#5 and # 8 are really well composed and framed...

I checked #1 out yesterday and wasn't impressed, but today it looks like a real good capture (it's slightly soft?)...

Is the drummer in # 2 a familiar face? for some reason, I thought I saw him in a pic here before... It also is a very good capture, especially as the distant drummer...

thanks john. i was kinda partial to 5 and 8 myself and glad you like em.

for #1, i've definitely posted softer shots that i think escaped comments...the AF may have locked onto the mic cage, but i don't think it's too soft to my eye.

for the drummer, i may have tossed him in the 'show me some drummers' thread.

I hear ya, regarding that occasional minuscule focus issue...

By the way, I actually am cheering #6 as the favorite of this set... My "type O", I guess.

To clarify: I don't think it's soft, but I noticed that other parts looked sharper then the eye...
(hard to tell on this size, you could tell easy in the high res version)
If it is the case, try this:
Duplicate the BG layer twice. On the middle layer, use a *bit* of (either gaussian or lens) blur. Mask this layer to only affect the sharp parts (cheek). You might want to add a bit of noise, since that will be blurred as well, and that would be a 'givaway'...
On the top layer, set blending mode to either 'soft light' or 'hard light' (probabely the first), and use Filter > Other > HighPass (radius depending on the amount of OoF: anywhere from 1 to 5 or so). Mask that layer to only touch the eyes...

Nice shots, very impressive and crisp, you should be proud, I almost could feel the vibrations from the images...

2 and 6 for me. 6 particularly has a real crisp feel to it. Great stuff.
