Here (13 mb) (http://photo.klein-jensen.dk/public/20070531_firstday5iso6400fullsize.jpg) is a jpeg file taken with Mark III at ISO 6400. Lots of noise.
I would like to see what the experts around here can do with that noise. I would like to see several examples done with different applications. (I don't have any myself and have no experience using them).
So if you are up to it download the jpeg and play with it. Then post it here (and link to the fullsize version) also please explain what and how you did it and with what application.
Here is it resized and like that I think it is usable.

What noise?
Personally, I don't think I'd even bother. Except maybe the color noise, but I'd do that during Raw conversion...
Anyway:
No expert by far, but gave it a try:
PSCS2 Noise reduction.
Strength: 3
Preserve details: 3%
Color noise: 42
Sharpen details: 15%
Red channel: 0
Green channel: Strength: 1; 10%
Blue channel: Strength: 3; 10%
Then duplicate layer; despecle; Fade despecle: Blending mode darken; 60 %.
Layer properties of this layer: Blend if underlaying layer: Dark slider split between 0 and 150.
Saved high res as a quality 12 jpg here (http://www.moonglade.net/~rene/POTN/RAW/20070531_firstday5iso6400fullsize.jpg)
LR: resized Bicubic Sharper, jpg quality 10:

If it weren't for the color noise, I'd prefer the original...

Yeah, WHAT noise?
Congrats on the body!
If nobody else does one, I'll do a quick Noiseware/Pro and post the settings tonight.
Then, I'll go sell my car.

This is a joke right? He just really wants to show off the MKIII. :p
It is visible in the full res version but man for ISO6400 that looks awesome, about the same as ISO800 on my XT.

Thanks.
I used the Auto Profile, then select the auto fine tune. The noise reduction amounts I used were
HIGH 100%
MID 50%
LOW 50%
Y 100%
Cr 90%
Cb 80%
I checked the Very Low Freq box, High quality, Smooth edges and High Resolution.

Nice job, Grizz!!
Here's a version using nothing other than what CS3 has to offer.
Recipe:
convert to LAB
copy Lightness channel
Dust/Scratches filter on copied channel to remove white artifacts
Apply Image, Darken blend mode (70% or thereabouts)
Surface Blur on a and b channels
convert back to RGB, one pass of Noise reduction filter.
Sorry, I don't have resources to post a full res image
Cheers!

I'll see that, and raise you one -- I hate him and the gear he rode in on.
(:p+)
@others - yea, this is a joke thread, but let's heat it up and keep it high on the list just for kicks.
I'd give you the friggin' test shot back, but I just looked it over -- two things. #1 WHAT noise, that is absolutely stunning. #2 good test shot subject as well. Noiseware/Pro, default 'more color noise' back off a few sliders and it is still almost too silky; so, since I'd have to play a bit to have it not do that, which would lead me to criminal acts to obtain such a body, I'll refrain.
This level of noise reminds me of the 1DMKIIN at around 1000 or so. Sick, wrong, simply sick and oh so wrong.
(seriously: thx for posting that -- enjoy!)

I would have to experiment more with the 6400 ISO. Care to send that MKIII over my way? I'll even pay for shipping! :p

I am going to assume that you only took this shot for testing purposes as there is no reason to shoot ISO 6400 shots at 1/1000 of a stationary dog.;)

I don't know how common this technique is, but in case anyone out there doesn't know about it....
I always do this before running noise ninja....

ps, awesome noise level at such a crazy high ISO.....that's incredible! I remember back in the day when I had a Canon S3IS and for the most part ISO 400 was not even usable lol. Even 200 produced some pretty bad noise sometimes....
6400 is just crazy :D

To be honest, that's excellent for ISO 6400, amazing. This camera is going to be so awesome for natural light macro, I'll be able to bump ISO to 1600 without lots of noise, softening of the image, or loss of details due to noise. I like!

The low light performance has to be the most impressive aspect of this new camera. Use it well, Tommy.

Thanks all. I am impressed how well the photo can be cleaned up. Previously with my 300D, 20D and even 5D I did not think the highest ISO were good enough to be worth the money and time it would cost to clean them up with noise reduction software.
But that has changed now. I think I will invest in a noise reduction application. Question is just which one.
Since PS CS2/soon CS3 is my editor in choise the noise reduction application must work well with that as a plugin. It should also be easy to use and not require a million settings to get good results. And price should be reasonable.
So what do you guys suggest? Which is the best?

Tommy, I believe the latest release of ACR (4.1) which is required for your camera's RAW files has a new and improved NR so I would start there first. Then if the results don't suit your needs you could look into Noise Ninja, or Noiseware, etc.

I just got the trial version installed so will check it out but at first glance I did not see anythng change when I changed the sliders for noise reduction (I was viewing at 100% ;) )
btw do you have any idea why Bridge does not generate thumbnails for mark III? The files open fine in Photoshop.

Btw can you remember what you did to remove the noise in CS3. If CS3 can do a good job on its own I think I might save the $80 the other applications cost.

I used the Noise Ninja plug-in.
