Well, using your clues, I would have to guess Winslow. But I don't see anything in the picture that would indicate that.

You're getting closer - try the other side of Flagstaff.

Roy Mathers

Well, we're going all round it, so it's time to give you directions how to get there! Go from Flagstaff to Las Vegas and you'll go through this town.
thomascanty

Well... The first real town you go through on that route is Williams. After that, I'm not sure. I drove from Flagstaff to Los Angeles...

Well guys, I suppose I'll have to tell you! It's interesting that no-one from Arizona has had a guess. As Thomas said. the first real town along that route is Williams - but the second one is the historic Route 66 town of SELIGMAN. Here is another picture of it taken while standing next to the bronze stag.
Was this too difficult/obscure?
thomascanty
19th of June 2007 (Tue), 09:18
I guess I just didn't stop in Seligman. One of these days I want to drive as much of the old Route 66 as I can. I know there are some great places to see along that road. I've been to quite a few on side trips here and there, but haven't made a trip out of just that yet.
So, who's next? I could probably post one up, but not until I get home from work. That won't be for a couple more hours.
tomd

Definitely not too hard, that's what it's all about! It just takes the right person to guess or the rest of us to zero in on clues, etc. The stag is certainly a defining monument in the town! Nice post!

Is there a significance to the stag and Seligman? I was googling every historic site along the route trying to find one with a tie to the statue of the stag. There were several with ties to the RR and Route 66, but none mentioned a statue of a deer, elk, etc.
Just curious. The stag seemed to be the focal point of your photo, so I was looking for significance there. I would love to hear what the significance is, if there is any.

I'm afraid I've no idea! We were visiting Seligman and the stag is such a prominent feature of the main street that it just had to be photographed. Seligman's main claim to fame, however, was its strategic position on the original Route 66. Oatman is another place around there that is well worth visiting (wild donkeys wandering up and down the main street).

I don't know why, but when I see the name Louis Vuitton, I always think of San Francisco. The architecture in that building doesn't look right for that city, though. My next guess would have been New York, except the palm trees don't fit now.

SoccerRef
19th of June 2007 (Tue), 10:39
Well, I just went to the Louis Vuitton site and looked at pictures of every store in North America where one might find palm trees (i.e. southern and western states) and found none that look like this building...
Which means one of three things. Either:
ONE - the building has been re-faced since the photo was taken, and the LV site has a more recent photo than the OP's.:D Or,
TWO - the building has been re-faced since the photo was taken, and the photo on the LV site is older than the one posted (doubtful, but possible). Or,
THREE - the location is one of the many that do not show a street view on the LV site, but rather show an interior view!
Now that I've wasted 35 minutes of my lunch hour, it's time to get back to work... and I still don't have an answer! :p
Roy Mathers
19th of June 2007 (Tue), 10:54
Well, I don't know how recent the pics on the LV site are, but I can tell you that this picture was taken just over a month ago, on 15 June - so the doubtful is possible!
SoccerRef
19th of June 2007 (Tue), 10:59
I just can't believe I actually sat here looking at Luis Vuitton stores for 35 minutes! Especially when I realized that at least half of them were in Malls, or the photos shown were interior photos, which wouldn't help me figure it out at all!
Anyway, this is a good one. Surely someone will figure it out!
Roy Mathers
19th of June 2007 (Tue), 11:05
SoccerRef - I've just looked at the LV site and it is on there (but I knew what address to look under, didn't I? ) BUT the picture on the site is of a totally different view from mine, so it wouldn't help you at all.

I just found a new tool for these searches... Google Earth!
This is the Luis Vuitton store on Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills CA!
You can clearly see the other side of the building matches your photo, and you can even see the statue in one of the user submitted photos!
Go to Google Earth and enter "295 N Rodeo Dr, Beverly Hills, Los Angeles, California 90210, United States". Click on the two little blue + indicators at the bottom of the photo. One is tagged "Luis Vuitton" and the other "Beverly Hills". In the "Beverly Hills" one you can see the statue in the middle of the street, and the "Luis Vuitton" clearly shows the same brick pattern and awnings!

I did the same thing using Google Maps! I plotted historical sites using the "Find Businesses" feature... but I couldn't find any that had a Stag reference, so I gave up... Now I'm going to Google Earth Seligman and see if I can find the statue!

I've never been to Ireland. In fact, I've only been outside the U.S. once. That was a very brief visit to Panama City, when I was in the Navy. I got so drunk during that visit, I don't remember anything about it. And, I didn't have a camera with me at the time, anyway. This is in the U.S.

If you right click on a photo that is linked and choose properties, you can see the address from where it is linked. For example in my photo post where I posted a photo of San Siro (earlier in this thread) if you right click on the photo and choose properties you will see that I have a photobucket account and that I have that photo saved in a directory called "POTN Photos". You can also see the name of the photo, img_###.jpg (I just don't remember the number).
SO, if someone put their photo in a directory called "Vacation in St Martin" and named the photo "Orient Beach", it would be a dead giveaway. The photo is now linked to another forum. I would venture to guess that bkw drives a Honda S2000 based on the forum to which he now has the photo linked. BUT at least it doesn't me anything about the photo itself!

lol. it was fairly easy
the pic was linked to http://www.s2ki.com.
went there and searched the forum for 230202 (id number for the pic)
came up with several posts by bkw. looked through them and saw the exact pic with a description. :)

Poseidon, looks like he probably at one time was holding a trident in his right (camera left) hand.

Thanks!
Apologies for posting two photos, but I didn't have one at hand that really captured the scene (and for the lousy quality on the second one - I had to quickly downsample it, and it didn't come through the process well...).

Not exactly, but much closer than Duxford!
I haven't been to the Aurora airport in a number of years, but I don't remember that they host a large airshow, and I'm certain that the very nice museum there doesn't have anything like the collection in the photos.
A hint: all the planes in the two photos flew into the location.

That's what makes this a cool game. People from all over the world posting photos from all over the world and making connections because of places they have mutually been. Whether that was vacation, business, or because you happen to live across the street is irrelevant.
If somebody posts a photo of Crew Stadium, I am going to jump all over the answer, 'cause I've been there several times every year since it opened. (I am still not sure why I am not ashamed to admit that, but that's the subject for another thread!)

Google maps did fail me when I was looking for the bandstand in Chicago (a couple of photos ago). I knew it was downtown Chicago and it looked quite distinctive, but I couldn't for the life of me find it in the the satellite photo. I did find it via a Google search, and then discovered that the maps photo only showed the construction site where is was being built... D'oh!

It's also fun when the GPS in the car doesn't "know" about a street. I'll be driving along and turn before the unit "thinks" I can.
It immediately starts trying to re-calculate the route, but when it doesn't know about the roads I am on, she ultimately gives up and just says (in the most polite manner, I might add) "Please make a LEGAL u-turn as SOON as possible").
It always makes me chuckle. I need to update her software... yeah, like that's gonna happen soon!
