Hmmm well if I keep guessing at the islands left in the Atlantic Ocean, I might get the answer soon............
In your clue 'I think you might be misjudging the scale of this photo', do you mean that the thing you have photographed is smaller then is being depicted?

In your clue 'I think you might be misjudging the scale of this photo', do you mean that the thing you have photographed is smaller then is being depicted?Well, in retrospect perhaps it wasn't a very helpful clue. I thought it might be bigger than people are assuming. However, I've just used Google Earth to measure the landmass that you can see in the photo, and it's not as large as I'd expected it to be. This is part of a surprisingly large landmass, but this picture (to my surprise) only shows a relatively small part of it.

Sable island?I'd never heard of Sable Island so I had to look it up. It's wrong, sorry.

Bahamas? (Or at least one of her islands)
StewartR
24th of September 2007 (Mon), 08:44
Scale: I'm guessing it's maybe 1 k in width and maybe 15+ k in length. Not bad. In fact it's somewhat larger than that, but not significantly so. The straight-line distance from that little islet on the left that looks like a Nike 'swoosh' to the lagoon in the foreground is about 19km, and the entire length of the (part of the) landmass which you can see here is probably around 30km or so.
StewartR
24th of September 2007 (Mon), 08:49
Bahamas? (Or at least one of her islands)Right country. But there are about 700 islands and 2,000 cays in the Bahamas, spread out over about 1,000km of ocean. I think it would be nice if you could be a little more precise.

How about: EleutheraWe have a winner!
It is Eleuthera, which is about 180km long and averages only a couple of km wide.
If you search for 'bahamas' on Google Maps, Eleuthera shows up quite clearly on the outer edge of the archipelago. It's worth doing because the satellite imagery of that region is really quite beautiful.
Your turn, glhs!

I'm finding this one quite difficult. There's lots in the picture but it's maddeningly difficult to pin down.
- It looks to me like this building is almost certainly a church. Anybody disagree with that?
- It looks quite old, which suggests Europe, but I don't recognise the architectural style. Does anybody else recognise it?
- The long straight avenue and the air conditioner on the wall of the building suggest it is not Britain.
- On the other hand, the CCTV camera and the tower block do suggest Britain. Plus, it's really hard to tell, but is that traffic driving on the left? It looks like that truck thing is coming towards us...
So I'd say it's a church in Britain. But I'm probably wrong.

Why do you have to be so rude? He presented a legitimate guess!
Marseille is west of Greece, and is in Europe, and the original poster hasn't said anything about the picture that would rule out Marseille from being the correct answer.
The OP never defined "close", if you compare Marseille and Melbourne by the distance from Greece they are, Marseille sure as hell is "close".

Hmmm! the map I have checked on lacks a scale but suffice to say you are closer IMO

Hamburg, crikey I thought that was in Germany. A quick Google tells me that Hamburg is way too far east.

St francis bay?
Not sure exatly how close St Francis is without getting the SA Road Atlas out but this place is no millionaires paradise which I see St Francis described as.
Is this a recent photo?
Well 2005 if my records are good. Why do you ask?

Well st francis is the only river mouth in between knysna and Port Elizabeth.
Now since Knysna is towards west of what you described, st francis.
I presume its Kromme river?
There is a Klasies river too, but its too small to be this mouth. But who knows
If its not th Klasies river or the Kromme river, I dunno what it is!?
So many rivers in such a tiny region! Its sure a tough one.
It may be near Oubosstrand for all I know, toughie toughie

OK some clues:-
The area has various hiking routes through it including one that is especially popular.
The area does get seasonal visitors but as a population in the off season it has less than 100 to approx 2000 in the high season excluding day visitors.
The origins I believe were a bohemian community of like minds (artists & the like) and very little development is allowed to keep the area pristine. Almost a Garden of Eden!
