Thanks guys. I'm going to have to dig out another batch of photos for WAIN soon, because I've been getting through them so quickly.
But you haven't seen this one before. Where Am I Now?

Monument Valley, Utah/Arizona.Nope.
Do you have a game/quiz show called QI (http://www.bbc.co.uk/comedy/qi/) on TV where you are? If the contestants give an answer which is obvious but wrong, a klaxon sounds and the wrong answer flashes up in huge letters on the screen behind them. I wish I could do that here.

No, we don't have that game show here.
I didn't really have a lot to go on with my guess, though. The firewall here at work blocks whatever site you store your images on, so I had to load the page on my cell phone to see the photo. It's kind of hard to tell what things are sometimes on that tiny screen.

OK guys, I need to head for bed soon, so here's a clue.
You know by now that I like to provide pictures with clues in them. This one is no different. Although this is a natural rock formation, it (and specifically the bit on the left) is named after a man-made object which it resembles. That's what I'm after, and if you can work that out then you'll also work out where I am.
(If you manage to guess where I am by flinging darts at a map of Utah, I'd still like to know what the rock is called. But at least then you'd know where to search....)

Thanks for the 'pointer' I have been trying to think of "objects" that these could resemble but to no avail - afteral beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
In respect of the lefthand formation one last clue please before I need to some shuteye too, is it the silhouette that looks like 'the object' or do we have imagine what it looks like in daylight so to speak?

It's time for me to get some shut-eye too, but I can leave you with a thought that may be of help to someone - or it may be completely off the track (if you'll forgive the pun). The formation on the left looks to me like a boot or shoe - does that help anyone?

In respect of the lefthand formation one last clue please before I need to some shuteye too, is it the silhouette that looks like 'the object' or do we have imagine what it looks like in daylight so to speak? You don't need to see it in daylight. The silhouette is better.

OK, time to review those clues. But first let's remind ourselves of the picture.
http://StewartR.smugmug.com/photos/214934015-L.jpg
The first clue emphasised that this is in the USA. That has two implications regarding the name. Firstly, I think it's fair to say that the object after which the rock on the left is named is one which would be more familiar to an American than, say, a European. Secondly, it's not called "xxxxxxx rock". If you remember your geography classes, there is a special words for this type of rock formation which is predominantly American.
The second clue was that I had to check with Google Earth before I was able to answer some of the questions. I know where I was when I took this, but I wasn't sure whether (a) I was in Utah, and/or (b) the rock is in Utah. As it turns out I was and it is, but I had to check. Now why might that be?

This is Gunsight Butte (http://elakepowell.com/freds/padre.htm), which occupies a narrow promontory jutting out into Lake Powell (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lake_Powell), in the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area (http://www.nps.gov/glca/). The photo was taken from a boat on the way back from a trip to Rainbow Bridge National Monument (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rainbow_Bridge_National_Monument). The boat trip starts from the Wahweap Marina, which is immediately south of the UT/AZ border, but Gunsight Butte is about 6km north of the border, and so was the boat when I took this picture.
This whole area is staggeringly beautiful and well worth a visit if you're planning a holiday in the American south west.

If there hadn't been so many people on the bridge, it wouldn't have gone so fast. I was intrigued by the fact that so many of the people are wearing white hats, and a couple of them are carrying parasols. That made me think they were Japanese, and that made the bridge much easier to find.

That looks like a naval 12 or 14 inch artillery piece mounted on a carriage suitable for adding to a railway carriage i.e. the railway part is gone either that from a shore battery usage. Though I cannot find an exact match to the above by way of 'evidence' is this one of the few remaining Atomic Annie Cannons - more correctly called an M65 Atomic Cannon (firing a 280mm round). NB There are supposed to three of the 52 made still in existance - located at the Aberdeen Proving Ground, Fort Sill Oklahoma and the location below . Though at least one source says there are 8 still to be seen/found!
Location (?) The National Atomic Museum, Albuquerque, New Mexico ???
Edit: The location could be next door at the Kirtland Airforce Base depending on when the picture was taken - assuming I have ID'ed the cannon correctly of course ;)
PS If this wrong & way off beam I had an interesting search of an intriguing period of history of the Cold War weaponry.

The M65 atomic cannon is a 280 MM, 47 ton mobile cannon that needs two trucks to move it at a maximum speed of 30 miles. It was capable of firing TNWs [tactical nuclear weapons] and conventional shells up to a range of 18 miles. It became obsolete as a result of the astronomical development in rocket technology which now provides both tactical as well as strategic delivery capabilities for all kinds of war heads.
