and they have the OK re-enactment in the main street every day.

Wow, that surprises me! They used to charge good money for that in the private open-air theater by the Corral. It's out in the public view now?

As for your picture, I'm guessing it's not in the U.S.

Roy Mathers
3rd of July 2007 (Tue), 13:45
They have the first part of the re-enactment in the main street (free), then the participants move inside the 'Corral' and, if you want to follow them, you pay!

You're right about the picture, by the way.

SoccerRef
3rd of July 2007 (Tue), 14:03
Ayers Rock, Australia...

Roy Mathers
3rd of July 2007 (Tue), 14:33
Absolutley correct, SoccerRef. What gave it away?

SoccerRef
3rd of July 2007 (Tue), 14:44
I was watching the Travel Channel a few months ago and the Vacation Destination was Australia. This was one of the featured places to visit. I couldn't remember the name, but having what information I did, finding it via Google took about three minutes...

I'm in the office right now and don't have access to my photo database, so if someone else wants to post one, go for it. I'll check again later tonight and post a new one if nobody has yet.

I'll upload a few photos to my photobucket so I have a few to fall back on, but for now, I'll enjoy knowing I won, and let someone else post if they so desire...

Roy Mathers
3rd of July 2007 (Tue), 14:56
I happen to have one ready so, if nobody minds, I'll hold the fort until SoccerRef is ready.....

SoccerRef
3rd of July 2007 (Tue), 14:59
Thanks Roy...

I'll guess Philadelphia, PA.

Roy Mathers
3rd of July 2007 (Tue), 15:14
'fraid not.

SoccerRef
3rd of July 2007 (Tue), 15:26
'fraid not.

WHAT!! That's ALL we get!? Come on Roy...

In the global scheme of things, you've given us the most macro shot yet. We get a door, some windows, a power box (cleverly disguised) and a people herder post. Unless someone's been there, nobody is going to get this without at least one clue. (Well, ok, You DID just tell us that it is NOT Philly...I guess that counts as a clue? )

thomascanty
3rd of July 2007 (Tue), 15:28
One last WAG before I sign off for the day...

Solvang, CA?

Roy Mathers
3rd of July 2007 (Tue), 15:32
OK - this is a very particular house and had a very famous resident. And it's not in the USA which, judging by the style of the house, narrows it down a bit. I just wanted to make you work for your answer;)

Scorpio

Robert Louis Stevenson... wherever the hell he lived =P

Roy Mathers
3rd of July 2007 (Tue), 16:20
Robert Louis Stevenson was Scottish - and this house isn't in Scotland.

tomd
3rd of July 2007 (Tue), 18:13
birth home of Tony Blair?

Roy Mathers
3rd of July 2007 (Tue), 18:15
Not a bad guess, Tom. Sadly it's wrong! I'll give you a narrowing-down clue before I go to bed - it's in Western Europe. Tomorrow, if nobody gets near, I'll offer some more.

Scorpio
3rd of July 2007 (Tue), 18:32
Belgium?

Roy Mathers
4th of July 2007 (Wed), 04:02
No, not Belgium. Next clue - it's in Germany.

tsk1979
4th of July 2007 (Wed), 04:14
Is it the Durer house in Germany?

Roy Mathers
4th of July 2007 (Wed), 04:19
No. One more clue -this house is a Mecca for music lovers.

thomascanty
4th of July 2007 (Wed), 04:28
Well, Google searches aren't helping me with this one. Maybe I should fire up Google Earth and fly around Germany to look for it...

Roy Mathers
4th of July 2007 (Wed), 04:32
OK - let's re-cap. It's in (what was West) Germany and is a very significant house for music lovers (a birthplace, perhaps?).

thomascanty
4th of July 2007 (Wed), 04:37
Heiligenstadt?

thomascanty
4th of July 2007 (Wed), 04:39
Bonn? Does this have anything to do with Beethoven, or am I on the wrong track?

thomascanty
4th of July 2007 (Wed), 04:56
Where is this

You're not really supposed to put up a new one until the previous one has been confirmed correct. And, if the house is in Heiligenstadt or Bonn, then it's my turn... ;)

Roy Mathers
4th of July 2007 (Wed), 04:57
You're right, it's Beethoven's birthplace but I think you are supposed to wait until the answer is verfied before you post another picture. In any case, SoccerRef should be next as I was just standing in for him (see earlier posts). Failing that, it should be Lonnie, who really got there first. Still, as you've already posted this....

thomascanty
4th of July 2007 (Wed), 04:57
And, it is in Bonn! http://www.bonn-region.de/showpic.php?file=uploads%2Fpics%2Fbeeth_haus_innen hof_03.jpg&width=800m&height=600m&bodyTag=%3Cbody%20style%3D%22margin%3A0%3B%20backg round%3A%23FFFFFF%3B%22%3E&wrap=%3Ca%20href%3D%22javascript%3Aclose%28%29%3B% 22%3E%20%7C%20%3C%2Fa%3E&md5=34197fed50e9ec8e0f95afd0de798e2a

Roy Mathers
4th of July 2007 (Wed), 05:07
Well done Lonnie (see my previous post). What do we do now?

thomascanty
4th of July 2007 (Wed), 05:08
I do have one ready, but we can go with tsk's since he's already posted it, if you want. Only problem is, Smugmug hosted images are blocked here at work. I can't see his picture except by coming in via my cell phone, and the screen is too tiny to really see enough detail.

Roy Mathers
4th of July 2007 (Wed), 05:15
I've tried copying and pasting if that's any help.

thomascanty
4th of July 2007 (Wed), 05:18
That helped. I can see it now, but I don't have the slightest clue where it is. Looking at it on my cell phone I was thinking India, but I don't think so now... Hmmmm...

Roy Mathers
4th of July 2007 (Wed), 06:56

Yep. I work every holiday except Thanksgiving, and that's only because I always have Thursdays off. I'd rather have the extra money.

In California somewhere (that's what the hills in the background suggest).

thomascanty
4th of July 2007 (Wed), 09:15
No, sorry. Not California.

Roy Mathers
4th of July 2007 (Wed), 09:21
So let's spread it a little wider - Arizona or Nevada?

thomascanty
4th of July 2007 (Wed), 09:26
One of those...

Roy Mathers
4th of July 2007 (Wed), 09:29
Don't tell me that they've built a 'proper' church near Las Vegas to compete with all the wedding chapels!

thomascanty
4th of July 2007 (Wed), 09:32
I'm sure there are real churches somewhere in Las Vegas. Just not near The Strip. This one happens to be several hundred miles away from The Strip.

Roy Mathers
4th of July 2007 (Wed), 09:37
Is this St Mary's, Virginia City?

thomascanty
4th of July 2007 (Wed), 09:48
I'm going to have to dig for something much more difficult next time. The full name is Saint Mary's in the Mountains Catholic Church.

Roy Mathers
4th of July 2007 (Wed), 09:51
Is it me, or do we wait for SoccerRef?

thomascanty
4th of July 2007 (Wed), 09:52

Roy Mathers
4th of July 2007 (Wed), 10:01
Well then, this should be easy!

thomascanty
4th of July 2007 (Wed), 10:02
San Francisco

Roy Mathers
4th of July 2007 (Wed), 10:11
That's not fair - far too quick:lol: I told you it would be easy - you obviously know the place?

thomascanty
4th of July 2007 (Wed), 10:14
Yep. I've never actually seen it in person even though I've been to San Francisco several times, but I have seen a lot of pictures of that building. :)

I have one in mind, but I need to go back to dialup to access my web site. Give me a little time to get it ready...

thomascanty
4th of July 2007 (Wed), 10:31
Ok, let's see if you've been here.

thomascanty
4th of July 2007 (Wed), 10:41
Nope. Not Red Rock Canyon.

Roy Mathers
4th of July 2007 (Wed), 10:59
That's not part of Bryce is it?

thomascanty
4th of July 2007 (Wed), 11:02
No, not Bryce, either. It does kind of look like that area though, doesn't it?

Becky N
4th of July 2007 (Wed), 11:04
Is that Death Valley in the background?

thomascanty
4th of July 2007 (Wed), 11:04
Not Death Valley, either.

Roy Mathers
4th of July 2007 (Wed), 11:09
No, not Bryce, either. It does kind of look like that area though, doesn't it?

Is that a kind of veiled clue? Or perhaps just an innocent remark?

thomascanty
4th of July 2007 (Wed), 11:16
It was an innocent remark. Sorry.

This is in an entirely different state.

Becky N
4th of July 2007 (Wed), 11:33
Gaaaaaaaaa, there are too many canyons out west. Lets start to narrow this down, is it in California?

tomd
4th of July 2007 (Wed), 12:04
The Badlands, SD?

tomd
4th of July 2007 (Wed), 12:15
Maybe Archers Nat'l Park?

thomascanty
4th of July 2007 (Wed), 12:18
Gaaaaaaaaa, there are too many canyons out west. Lets start to narrow this down, is it in California?

Not anywhere in California. (Or Utah, by the way -- so it's definitely not Bryce.)

The Badlands, SD?

Not in South Dakota.

Maybe Archers Nat'l Park?

Not Mount Archer National Park OR Arches National Park, which I think is what you meant.

tomd
4th of July 2007 (Wed), 12:20
Shoshone National Forest. Wyoming?

thomascanty
4th of July 2007 (Wed), 12:23
Not in Wyoming. As John B. L. Soule once said (not Horace Greeley, as is often mistakenly cited): "Go west, young man!"

thomascanty
4th of July 2007 (Wed), 12:41
Need another hint? This is not a National Park, but it is part of the National Park System (ie: a NP pass will get you in).

South, and maybe a little further east. (This was in answer to your Zion guess -- and by the way, I already said it wasn't in Utah)

thomascanty
4th of July 2007 (Wed), 12:53
Obviously not in Idaho if you have to go south from Utah. ;)

thomascanty
4th of July 2007 (Wed), 13:04

You finally made it to the right state. Wrong part of it, though.

Craters of the Moon, Idaho?

It's south of Utah which is south of Idaho. ;)

Lonnie, we all are revengeful here ;-)

Oh, I can't wait to find out what I have to go through to figure out my next one... LOL

tomd

thomascanty

Roy Mathers

I thought you meant south east of my last suggestion - Washington:(

tomd
4th of July 2007 (Wed), 13:13
Glen Canyon or Lake Powell?

Spoon fed: I mean these clues are great, but I'm still babbling all over the place taking stabs at it.

I did... It is southeast of Washington. (I'll quote what I'm replying to, to make sure that's clear.)

Or, did you mean Washington D.C.?

thomascanty
4th of July 2007 (Wed), 13:17
Chiricahua Mountains, AZ (can't remember if that's the right spelling)?

Close enough for me. It's Chiricahua National Monument. Only about 50 miles east of Tombstone, so I was wondering if you made it there on your visit a few weeks ago. I can't wait to back to this place and do some hiking.

And, if anyone is wondering, that's pronounced Cheer-uh-cow-uh.

You're up, Roy!

thomascanty

Psst... Hey! Roy. (poke, poke) You're up. It's your turn...

Roy Mathers

Sorry for the delay folks, I've been out!

Lonnie - yes we did go to the Chiricahuas while we were in the area, and we drove through the Cochise Stronghold - wonderful place.

Anyway, here's the next one, which shouldn't be too difficult.

Atlantic Ocean

Kinda sorta, want more specific, south of where you already mentioned.

Going to go enjoy a recreation fire for a bit, will check back in an hour or so.

How abou the Delaware River or Delaware Bay near Philadelphia?

BearLeeAlive
4th of July 2007 (Wed), 20:16
LOL, I coulda sworn it was this boat. The Stacy McAllister from McAllister Towing who claims it to be working in New York.

http://www.mcallistertowing.com/Images/SpecPhotos/Stacy-(web).jpg

Therefore I will guess their other cities on the eastern seaboard;
Philadelphia
Baltimore
Virginia
Georgetown
Wilmington
Charleston
Jacksonville
Port Everglades

http://www.mcallistertowing.com/fleet.htm
http://www.mcallistertowing.com/TugsandSpecs/stacy.htm

GeoffSobering

I'm not changing my guess, but in November 2005, Popular Mechanics did an article that described the Stacy Mcallister as "New York's flagship":

... and in 2006 she was spotted in the Kill Van Kull River at Bayonne,NJ:

Yes, I could have listed McAllisters eastern ports in separate posts since Becky confirmed it was south of New York, but that would make me out to be a post whore, and I do have a reputation to uphold (though I'm not real sure it is a good one). ;)

Oops - the above message seems to have come out twice. Could the mod please remove one of them. Thanks.

I don't think the mods spend enough time in these threads any more to notice requests like this, unless someone clicks the red triangle to report a problem. But, you can delete one of those posts yourself. Just click the edit button on one of them, then click the delete button.
